Owner description: The Basilica Cistern is the largest of several hundred ancient cisterns beneath the city that provided a water filtration system for the buildings nearby. This underground chamber measures approximately 138 meters (453 ft) by 64.6 meters (212 ft) and is capable of holding 80,000 cubic meters (2,800,000 cu ft) of water. The ceiling is supported by 336 marble columns.

Basilica Cistern is underground chamber where water was held during Roman reign in Istanbul. It is nicely lighted with silent music playing. There is also a cafe inside. Nice experience especially during rainy days or days with unpleasant weather. Also accessible with wheelchair.

With a freezing wind outside it was nice and warm down below. An amazing place, light give it atmosphere and you can see fish swimming in the water. Reasonable entrance fee of 10tl

An awesome place to visit. Everyone should go visit this while in Istanbul. You need to read the new Dan Brown book Inferno before you go. It will make it much more interesting.

Even with long lines to get in, the lines do move rather rapidly. I have to say that I don't know anywhere else you can see Medusa's head which in this atmosphere between a sea of columns in darkness adds an element of magic and mystery.

Great historical spot surrounded by cisterns rising on a medusa legend to learn lessons from a one in the eye story.
