Owner description: The Basilica Cistern is the largest of several hundred ancient cisterns beneath the city that provided a water filtration system for the buildings nearby. This underground chamber measures approximately 138 meters (453 ft) by 64.6 meters (212 ft) and is capable of holding 80,000 cubic meters (2,800,000 cu ft) of water. The ceiling is supported by 336 marble columns.

If time allows, then the Basilica Cistern is worth a quick visit. Eerily dark, damp and cool, this underground reservoir is interesting. Photographers will like the 2 Medusa heads and the orange lights on the columns. The best shot of the columns is near the exit.

It is a very dramatic scenery down there but after 5 minutes you feel quite done.
it is only 10 try for a visit tough and it is worth a quick visit in my opinion if you are interested in historical monuments.

Amazing space! Underneath the chaos of Istanbul, through the small door at street level and down the white rabbit stairs is the magical calm of this huge cathedral to water. Breath-taking, not to be missed.

This is just near the Topkapi palace and in my opinion was far more interesting and awe-inspiring. It's an underground water cistern with calming music. Definitely do not miss this. T

Hidden under the city lays this fantastic piece of architecture. Very well illuminated. A must see! Only 10 TL. Very close to Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia.
