Owner description: The Basilica Cistern is the largest of several hundred ancient cisterns beneath the city that provided a water filtration system for the buildings nearby. This underground chamber measures approximately 138 meters (453 ft) by 64.6 meters (212 ft) and is capable of holding 80,000 cubic meters (2,800,000 cu ft) of water. The ceiling is supported by 336 marble columns.

This is an outstanding experience. It is well kept inside. Watch out for moist walkways, a soft rubber soled shoes is a must. In some places it is frankly slippery. People with health related coordination issues, neuro-muscular conditions or frail disposition should be particularly careful or hold on to someone.

I really liked the Cistern. It is a very unusual place to visit, shame it is packed with tourists. Beautiful, inspiring atmosphere and amazing architecture.

Really liked this dark and fascinating place underground! The Medusa head was very special. The place can get very crowded but it's worthwile to queue.

My husband and I stopped here without really knowing what to expect. We were so surprised after buying our tickets and walking down the stairs to this awesome underground experience! The place wasn't enormous, so we were in and out in about half an hour. The red//orange lighting, the daunting columns, and the 2 Medusa's heads at the very back all made for some excellent photo opps. People with vision or mobility problems will want to exercise caution, as the walkways are wet and the whole place is pretty dark. It is a neat experience that doesn't take long, and I would recommend it to anyone visiting Istanbul.
