Owner description: The Basilica Cistern is the largest of several hundred ancient cisterns beneath the city that provided a water filtration system for the buildings nearby. This underground chamber measures approximately 138 meters (453 ft) by 64.6 meters (212 ft) and is capable of holding 80,000 cubic meters (2,800,000 cu ft) of water. The ceiling is supported by 336 marble columns.

This is a bit of a magical place. I would have preferred it to be less crowded, but it was an interesting visit nonetheless.

another queue, but worth it... never been to an under ground cisterna before and you can walk round between the pillars on boards which is certainly worth the visit

The cisterns are a 2 minute walk from Haighia Sofia and cost 10TL (about £3.50) to enter. Once you have climbed down the steps the rows of columns snake away from you, into the darkness. The lights are very low here, which adds to the atmosphere, so photography isn't easy as most flashes won't illuminate anything more than the first few feet in front of you.
There is a walkway around the building and a small cafe at the end, after the medusa stones. I'd recommend 30 mins to an hour here, it's more about absorbing the atmosphere and marvelling at the effort that went into creating such beauty, knowing it was going to be flooded and unseen.
