Owner description: The Basilica Cistern is the largest of several hundred ancient cisterns beneath the city that provided a water filtration system for the buildings nearby. This underground chamber measures approximately 138 meters (453 ft) by 64.6 meters (212 ft) and is capable of holding 80,000 cubic meters (2,800,000 cu ft) of water. The ceiling is supported by 336 marble columns.

“Worth the visit”
Reviewed October 4, 2012

The Basilica Cistern is a little difficult to find (we walked right by it twice without noticing the entrance). The cistern is amazing with its perfect Roman design and execution. Who would know that the columns in the cistern were supporting the roads and buildings above?

“loved the place. really!”
Reviewed October 4, 2012

I loved the place. it has a wonderful atmosphere and surely worth a visit. It is a lack of light there and really impressive with ancient columns, big white fishes swimming all over and water dropping off the ceiling. must see in Istanbul.

“Dark and cooling respite from the sun”
Reviewed October 4, 2012

A nice cooling hideout from the hot blistering afternoon sun. Its like an underground cave lit by orange lights, giving it a mysterious glow. There were many fishes swimming in the water, some were quite huge. The floor was wet and slippery, so best not to wear heels. There were big fat drops of water falling from the ceiling, so dun be too surprised when one of them hit your head.

“Fascinating”

Despite the dreadful canned music, this is worth seeing. The Medusa heads at the far end are beautiful and mysterious.
