Owner description: The Basilica Cistern is the largest of several hundred ancient cisterns beneath the city that provided a water filtration system for the buildings nearby. This underground chamber measures approximately 138 meters (453 ft) by 64.6 meters (212 ft) and is capable of holding 80,000 cubic meters (2,800,000 cu ft) of water. The ceiling is supported by 336 marble columns.

Those Romans rocked 1500 years ago, they built this , such a feat and just for a water reservoir? It's still fairly good nick and they didn't 't need no meddling council to interfere either

The play of light and music against the pillars will give you en eerily good feeling- if that even makes sense. The upside down Medusa head is just creepy in a very amazing way. the way it was built- Roman architecture- truly to be respected and admire for centuries.

This was such an unexpected surprise. Don't miss it. It looks like a palace built underground. Look carefully at the columns - they are mainly different. That's because the cistern was built with the remains of Greek temples etc. Wonderful!

One of the most beautiful places I've seen... the lights and the water do the trick!!!!! I can imagine a concert down there.

The cistern was a very cool space to see. It doesn't take very long, but it's worth the visit. The entrance fee is reasonable as-is the audio guide.
