Owner description: Besides its importance as the first Turkish museum, it remains one of the world's largest museums with over one million works. Opened to the public in 1891, it houses a collection of Greek, Roman and Byzantine artifacts.

This is a large museum but well worth taking the time to explore. Exhibits are thoughtfully arranged, although clearer external signage (maybe part of the current renovations?) would be helpful. I had visited a number of the sites that exhibits came from, which I think was more helpful than visiting the museum without that context.

A warning: the Museum is at present under heavy restoration, which means that some of its greatest treasures (eg. the Alexander Sarcophagus) cannot be seen. When finished, it should be one of the great Ancient Museums of Europe

This is an amazing museum with an impressive collection. It is very organized and even though it is under construction, including the section where the Alexander Sarcophagus is located, it is worth it. Make sure to see the oldest known peace treaty in the world, the Kadesh Peace Treaty from 1258 BC.

It is close to the Topkapi palace and a 3-4 hours are needed to see the museum. A cafe and restrooms are available.

The visit will require around 2-3 hours minimum as this is a multi floor venue with plenty to see from ancient greek to phoenician and mesopotamian artefacts, tombs and scriptures from early mesopotamia and the first Phoenician alphabet
It is equipped with lavatories which makes it easier to stay longer inside despite the heat in certain areas
Cameras are allowed but no video nor flash light
After the museum try the neighbouring markets much cheaper than the bazar right behind the museum (some shopkeepers are actually from Aleppo multilingual and very friendly

WOW!!! This is truly the best museum I have ever visited. I especially loved seeing the clay tablets with the world's oldest love poem, and the Code of Hammurabi. My husband loved the Kadesh peace treaty - so many historical artifacts, many of which were several thousand years old. I literally got chills seeing in person things that I've only ever read about. We did all the typical tourist activities while in Istanbul, but visiting this museum was by far our favorite.
