Owner description: Besides its importance as the first Turkish museum, it remains one of the world's largest museums with over one million works. Opened to the public in 1891, it houses a collection of Greek, Roman and Byzantine artifacts.

Right next to Topkapi, the Istanbul Archaeological Museums are not to be missed, with impressive exhibits and beautiful grounds to enjoy. You can choose to go into one building or all three, but you will see some amazing artifacts and recognize the importance of Istanbul throughout history. The room detailing all the districts of Istanbul and their historical artifacts is a must see, as well as the Egyptian and Mesopotamia rooms.

Visited Istanbul as an Independant traveller intending to spend a short time exploring the sights, ended up spending our whole holiday there (14 nights) as the culture and sights where unbelievable, from Mosques to Museums to Palaces to Galleries to Eateries, the choice was endless, B&B Prices were reasonable depending on your requirements and no problem in finding accommodation. Local food is inexpensive but alcohol is expensive. Travel by local authority transport (trams ,buses, boats)is cheap if you buy top up contract passes. Be prepared for a stewpot of cultures.

Parts of the museum have been beautifully renovated and the presentation of the artifacts is excellent. Other parts are still awaiting work and rather "dusty", but the museum is well worth a visit if you have any interest in the subject or simply appreciate beautiful works of early art.

I'm not the typical person to visit archaeological museums, but this one is really good. There's so much of the culture of the area gathered in one place.
I think there were some renovations going on so we might have missed some things
