This is a revered place of pilgrimage for Muslims at the foot of the cemetery leading down from the Pierre Loti viewpoint.

One of the mosques I would have regretted not being to ... very nice from inside and ouside, not as decorated as the other mosques in the Istanbul but still has got it's unique feel. Spend some time walking into the streets next to the mosque for an unbeatable experience.

The mosque was built to honor Eyup, the Islamic conqueror of Istanbul. His tomb and some other companions are buried in the mosque complex. Compared to other mosques, there seem to be more worshippers seen inside.

The Eyüp Sultan Mosque is sacred place as it holds the remains of Abu Ayyub al-Ansari, the companion and standard bearer of the Prophet Muhammad. As part of the Arab Army during the first attempt of the conquest to capture Constantinople he was killed during the action and was buried here. You will not find all that many tourist visiting even though it is close to the center of Istanbul. Unfortunately on my visit on the 13th March, the tomb area and outside wall was undergoing restoration. You can see the tomb through a glass window and the facade of the tomb which is covered in Iznik tiles was all covered up. The main mosque is still open for pray and visitors.
There is public transport to Eyup from Eminonu including ferry or bus. We opted to go via taxi and it was only 12TL.
