Owner description: This enormous palace was the Imperial residence of Ottoman sultans for almost 400 years. Although much of the palace is not accessible, the daily tours of the Harem are of great interest to tourists.

I so wished we would have had a little more time at this sight on our tour. What a beautiful place! We toured the buildings and saw all of the artifacts in them, but were unable to go into the palace and see any of them rooms. It seems that the palace was actually closed on the day we were there and only opened to facilitate the cruise ships in port. I guess the short tour was better than not seeing it at all. On the way out, we saw a movie crew shooting a documentary in front of the castle. It was great to hear the authentic music, see the authentic costumes, and imagine what it may have been like at the palace thousands of years ago. Don't miss it!

We made the mistake of going early afternoon and couldn't move for cruise ship groups.

The ticket office is on the right BEFORE you go in under the gate. We were so busy looking at the entrance that we didn't notice the ticket office and had even had our bags x rayed before we realised we'd not yet bought tickets - had to go out and repeat the process.

We should have bought a Museum card - even if you're only in Istanbul for 24 - 48 hours, you'll save money by getting one - and hassle. It allows you to skip the queues.

The only reason my husband's and my rating of this is not "Excellent" is our own faults - we missed out on much of what there is to see in the Palace. We went right before dinner and there were huge lines to get in to the jewel rooms. Once we made it out of those, we kind of forgot that there would be a lot more to see and headed out to get dinner. Because of that, we missed out on the Harem apartments, the museum of arms, etc. If we go back to Istanbul (which we hope to do), we will definitely visit this site in the morning or right after lunch so that we will have a few hours to look around.

The Topkapi Palace shouldn't be missed. Highlights include the Treasury with superlative jewels, the Harem (can't believe a previous poster said they skipped the Harem; what a loss), and the pavilions overlooking the Golden Horn. You can also have a drink or eat outside the Konyali restaurant with a lovely view of the Bosphorous.
