Owner description: This enormous palace was the Imperial residence of Ottoman sultans for almost 400 years. Although much of the palace is not accessible, the daily tours of the Harem are of great interest to tourists.

So much to see it was hard to take it all in. We went Monday so the Archeological Museum and Aya Sophia were closed meaning big crowds at the palace. Highlights were definitely the religious relics and the pair of 48 kg gold candle sticks.

I paid to enter the palace and soon found myself drowning amongst tour groups and fellow travellers. There was a queue of about 100 people waiting for the arguably the most interesting part - the treasury.

The palace itself is also somewhat mundane - unless you have specific interest in the history of Istanbul then I wouldn't bother. I feel it's the sort of thing people do because they feel obliged to...but in reality there are much more exciting things on offer in this city.

TIP for anyone who still decides to go: if there is an enormous queue for tickets at the ticketing office, just go to the far side and you'll see there are a couple of self-service ticket machines accepting both cash and card. Nobody was using these, so I managed to skip the 45-minute line.

the jewelry, armaments and royal clothing displays are breathtaking. The buildings are interesting but overshadowed by the exhibits and other attractions in Istanbul
