Owner description: This enormous palace was the Imperial residence of Ottoman sultans for almost 400 years. Although much of the palace is not accessible, the daily tours of the Harem are of great interest to tourists.

We used our 72 hour Istanbul Museum Pass to gain entry and were therefore able to avoid the long queues at the ticket booths. At the entrance it was very crowded and congested but once into the extensive grounds it isn't quite so busy. We arrived soon after opening time (9.30am) and started our exploration of the palace by visiting the Harem (entry to this also is included in the Museum Pass). Make sure that you visit the various exhibitions - the Armoury and Royal Jewels are particularly stunning. The layout of the Palace and grounds can be a little confusing so a map or the hiring of the readily available audio guides would be advisable.

I loved topkapi! It's beautiful and well maintained. It could easily take 3 hours to complete, and that's the minimum if you want to see everything. Expect a lot of walking and long queues in the high season! Try to purchase your ticket online, it will save you 2 hours (i kid you not!)

This site was the most disappointing of the places we visited in Istanbul. The buildings were beautiful and the museum pieces encrusted with jewels and gold were spectacular. But there was no photography permitted inside the buildings. I was disappointed at the time but even more so when showing by photos to friends and family. I had to keep trying to describe what we saw but had to keep saying, "but we couldn't take inside pictures." This was not true of other sites such as the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sofia. We visited on a walking tour and our guide had us there early.. This was wise. By the time we were leaving (around 11AM) the lines into the buildings were extremely long. Also, there were no bathrooms for the visitors unless you could walk down a long flights of stairs to an adjacent restaurant.

Topkapi Palace is one of the top sights in Istanbul. Many wonderful exhibits with extraordinary pieces. The only "complaint" is that the preservation of the relics requires that photographing is not allowed. So most of the camera enthusiasts are taking photos of the buildings, and very old tree, and a great view of the Bosphorus and Asia across the strait.

Still worth a visit for the insight to history.

Warning (July '13) - lot's of construction
