Owner description: This enormous palace was the Imperial residence of Ottoman sultans for almost 400 years. Although much of the palace is not accessible, the daily tours of the Harem are of great interest to tourists.

After the blue mosque a great one to visit.... Go early and straight to the Harem... Only so many people are allowed in, so best to go there first... Also a great restaurant overlooking Bosporus....

The palace is beautiful and the views from the palace are amazing as well. We went first thing in the morning as soon as they open and I definitely recommend going as early as possible. It was pleasant the first hour and a half that we were there, but then it just got steadily more crowded and made the experience less pleasant. The lines to get into the different display rooms became longer and longer. My favorite displays were the arsenal and the treasury. The jewels in the treasury were absolutely exquisite!

My friend and I did the self guided audio tour and it was definitely worthwhile to do the tour. We spent almost 5 hours at the palace including the Harem. We did take a little coffee break at the cafe, which was overpriced but we were grateful to be able to buy some refreshments without having to leave the palace.

It is a definite must see in Istanbul!

Loved the slowly shrinking interior as you progressed inward. Found the clock room stunning. The clothing room was also interesting. And take the signs seriously--they do NOT allow photos. We saw one gentleman loudly escorted out for not stopping his photo taking. Awkward!

The sultans certainly knew how to live. As palaces go it has a degree of modesty and simplicity. It can be crowded and the visitors love the treasures and seemingly are less interested in the beautiful clothing from the past, which are magnificently preserved and should be seen. The Harem is very lovely.

We had a guide, thank goodness. It was like a stampede getting in, heaving chaos. Once we finally got inside the grounds it was lovely. Fantastic jewels and armour, although you are herded around the edge of the room in an odd fashion. The salons are stunning, but I think seeing it once is enough!
