Owner description: This enormous palace was the Imperial residence of Ottoman sultans for almost 400 years. Although much of the palace is not accessible, the daily tours of the Harem are of great interest to tourists.

The Topkapi Palace and grounds is a huge place with multiple areas and museums. Photography wasn't allowed in the museums so I got no pictures of the collections of armor, clothing, swords or jewelry, nor the large collection of clocks. I did shoot tons of pictures in the Harem, which we explored first. I'm grateful for that as there were very few tourists until about the time we finished exploring that area. By 1 or 2pm we began to get run over by waves of Asian tour groups and the crowds made it very difficult to view some of the other areas.

The palace is not as inspiring as I had imagined especially the Harem where you must pay extra to get in. The treasures were displayed in a very ordinary way. Everything is falling apart!
Still, this is the real-deal! This was where the Sultans ruled one of the largest and most power empires plus they were the Caliphate for all the Muslims of the world. You see how the richest people lived a few hundred years ago and you realize that you live much better than they ever could.
The Piri Reis map is here and it is worth reading about first or you won't know what the big deal is. It is located at the end of the Muslim artifact rooms right next door to the man reading the Koran all day long (yes, a real man!). The map is from 1513 and it was made using much earlier maps that are lost to us now. It (supposedly) shows a little bit of Antarctica UNDER the ICE. No one had discovered that continent yet and the last time it was ice-free was 4000 BCE. So a little bit of a mystery here.

Be ready to walk the grounds....you will love the Sultan's jewels, and every much enjoy having a coffee at their coffee shop.

This place is fascinating.. Prepare yourself to spend at least 4 hours there. The audio guide is useful but not crucial and it costs an extra 25 TL for the palace and the harem section.
Do not miss this place if your are in Istanbul.
