Scaffolding, the bane of travelers everywhere, especially if they are photographers. Was in Istanbul in 2012 after a long absence and was reminded of what a spectacular site the Hagia Sophia is - a top 50 to see before you die. Was back in 2013 and brought my kids to see it and lo and behold, half the inside was covered in monstrous scaffolding. It broke my heart to have the kids see it that way. See the Hagia Sophia at least once in your life, spend the time to really see it thoroughly, but if you can, find out when that scaffolding comes down and then go. A five star plus without scaffolding.
