Very nice to visit, but with all the scaffolding not sure about timing?

No need to take a guide, but audio is nice

Wow! The Hagia Sophia is just stunning! It is beautiful and the history is fascinating. This was my favorite thing that I did while in Istanbul. I did the self guided audio tour and thought the tour was definitely worthwhile. I spent about 2 hours here. Also, I went first thing in the morning when it opened to beat the crowds and think that is probably the best way to do it.

Even though you expect it, the sheer size is stunning. The light and colors are gorgeous. Do not miss the golden mosaics--look up always! Also, note the areas on upper arches where faint human forms show through--these are areas under restoration. In a few years new mosaics will be visible. Lovely to see restoration in progress.

Someone recommended this to us, and we were initially a little disappointed, but then we went up a level and really enjoyed it! Interesting blend of Christianity and Islam. Icons are breathtaking, and will be really spectacular when renovations are complete

Luckily our hotel is right behind the hagia sophia. We went early to get Istanbul museum card. ( By the way, I recommend big time as it includes most the places you will be visiting anyway and you don't have to queue!) The museum card is sold separately, on these tiny vans next to the musueum entrance. When I went in, gosh, the places is amazing! It's so huge- the ceilings are amazing. But don't forget to go upstairs to as there are exhibitions up there as well.
