Owner description: This architectural marvel displays 30 million gold tiles throughout its interior, and a wide, flat dome which was a bold engineering feat at the time it was constructed in the 6th century.

Even at the end of October there is a wait to get a ticket and the "guides" pestering to offer you their services are annoying, but the wait is certainly worth it. And so are the audio guides which allow you to explore at your own pace (although be prepared to leave a passport or drivers licence or hefty deposit to guarantee return of the headset) And be sure to go upstairs and see the upper level as well.

I didn't know what to expect from the Hagia Sophia other than an old church/mosque. And the exterior is humble; to say the least. But on stepping inside it was quick to become my favorite tourist attraction in Istanbul. The audio guides are very helpful if you opt not for an actual guide. All in all I LOVED the Hagia Sophia!

Whatever you do leave plenty of time on your visit to spend two to three hours here. You can't take it all in in less time than that. Go upstairs and walk around on all three sides. Take the time to sit on the lower level and watch the hundreds of people as they pass you by. On a hot day this is a cool place to visit. Take the time to soak it in.

The best way to see Hagia Sophia is to get a guide- we paid 60 Lira for the guide plus 50 Lira for the entrance fee. It was well worth it as you get a greater understanding of the history.
