Owner description: Built between 1609-1616, this impressive mosque has six minarets. Why is it called "Blue Mosque?" There are two stories: the first, more common one is that the interior is covered in Blue İznik tiles. The second is: Many years ago, ancient sailors who sailed by the mosque on the Marmara Sea saw the blue colors of the sea reflected in the mosque.

The architechture is simply stunning. It's THE landmark of the city, togther with St Sophia. The only downside is the smell of feet...I have visited the mosque several times and sometmes it is unbearable.

To avoid the massive lines here arrive either before 9 or before 2 (which is when the mosque is closed to visitors- between 1 and 2- for prayers) . Entry is free. I did not get a guide and avoided all the friendly men who are Turkish rug salesmen. Women need to cover their head with a scarf, which I had but if you don't and your clothing is not appropriate you are supplied with a scarf and outer wrap. Men need to wear long trousers. Shoes are removed and placed in a plastic bag. I entered to the sound of a sermon in English. The carpet was soft underfoot and the ceiling soared majestically above. It was better than I imagined with stunning tile patterns and atmospheric light. The other point of interest was the people. Very interesting being able to see a working mosque.

I was in Istanbul on business trip. The company arranged me to stay next to the Blue mosque and Hagia Sophia, which was really good. The blue mosque was entry and open till quite late, so I got to see the mosque during different time of the day. You get a nice break from the hustle and bustle of the old city.

Great decoration inside this Mosque, some as old as the 14th and 15th Century. Beware the unnoficial guides lurking who only really want to sell you a carpet. Some are genuine and sincere in their effort to help you and a little tip 20 to 30 Turkish Lira will get you the guided tour with everything explained.

If you haven't been to blue mosque then you did not visit istanbul. No trip will be complete without it.
