Owner description: Built between 1609-1616, this impressive mosque has six minarets. Why is it called "Blue Mosque?" There are two stories: the first, more common one is that the interior is covered in Blue İznik tiles. The second is: Many years ago, ancient sailors who sailed by the mosque on the Marmara Sea saw the blue colors of the sea reflected in the mosque.

“Both breathtaking and hypnotic”
Reviewed October 20, 2013

You must 'pay' a visit the Blue Mosque...... It was one of the most memorable visits I have ever had (there is not an 'entrance' fee to Sultan Ahmet Camii but you can donate on exit). I didn't expect to be allowed to take photos inside.... you can not imagine how beautiful and mesmorising this Mosque is. There is definitely a spiritual feel to this place. Of course ladies have to were a head scarf and cover up..... and shoes (obviously) must be taken off. A truely inspiring place to visit!

DO allow plenty of time to visit.
Walk all around the outside to see all the different angles. HUGE outside and inside. Very historic.

“Beautiful Mosque”

Very Grand, and still functional. The competing calls for prayers within the area is divine.
A standing monument to brilliance.

“beware of plastic”
Reviewed October 20, 2013

The mosque itself was breathtakingly lovely, and so worth the visit. However, the public visit managers have created an unnecessary environmental issue by providing guests with plastic bags in which to carry their shoes while they visit.
We were amazed because there is a shelf for shoes right next to the door, and the volume of plastic bags that are generated from the thousands of daily visitors must be incredible. Not to mention - if you have to carry a plastic bag with your shoes in them, you can probably just carry your shoes.
When you go - use the shoe shelves!
