Owner description: Built between 1609-1616, this impressive mosque has six minarets. Why is it called "Blue Mosque?" There are two stories: the first, more common one is that the interior is covered in Blue İznik tiles. The second is: Many years ago, ancient sailors who sailed by the mosque on the Marmara Sea saw the blue colors of the sea reflected in the mosque.

The Blue Mosque is absolutely stunning. The ceramic tiles, stain glass windows, and marble columns are just absolutely gorgeous. Definitely a must-see while in Istanbul!

Also, they offer free long skirts and scarves for women to wear to enter the mosque. So if you don't have your own, you can just slip on the free ones before entering.

No trip to Istanbul would be complete without a trip to the old city including a visit to the Sultan Ahmed Mosque (Blue Mosque). It was constructed starting in 1600, completed some 16 years later.
Overall it is huge, 6 minarets surround the main dome. The courtyard is almost as big as the mosque itself. The interior is visually stunning as well as very peaceful given all the visitors milling about.Read about the history before you visit.

This is a lovely Mosque and the blue tiling makes it quite unique. You can get there easily by tram. There is no charge for entry and on leaving you can donate Lira towards the upkeep if you wish. I liked that they had the necessary cover ups (head scarf and wrap to cover legs) for you to borrow as it was not something I had with me. When in the queue you will get a few "tour guides" who offer to get you in quicker - we stayed put and the queue moved quickly. On a Friday there are prayers from about 12 midday to 2pm and you cant enter during this time. We took the opportunity to have a bite to eat. A local police man recommended the community restaurant opposite the Blue Mosque where we had a lovely donor pita bread for 6TL and a complimentary Apple tea after the meal. The service was fantastic.

Subtly stunning. Don't worry about having the right clothing, they will provide women with shawls and men with skirts to cover all appropriate areas.

First saw it at dusk and it is an amazing sight, made more beautiful due to the lights to celebrate Ramadan. Beautiful tiles inside, hence the name.
Would be better with a guide if this is your first visit to a mosque!
