Owner description: Built between 1609-1616, this impressive mosque has six minarets. Why is it called "Blue Mosque?" There are two stories: the first, more common one is that the interior is covered in Blue İznik tiles. The second is: Many years ago, ancient sailors who sailed by the mosque on the Marmara Sea saw the blue colors of the sea reflected in the mosque.

“A beautiful space.”
Reviewed May 14, 2013

This building is incredible. Even though the mosque is closed between 12 and 2 for worshipers, I still didn't realise it was a working mosque and people were in there praying while we were sightseeing. I chose to go immediately at the 2pm re-opening so that it was not so crowded. It was a magic space. Beautiful! You must take off your shoes and women must cover their heads. The carpet feels superb. The ambiance of the space is reverential. An experience which should not be missed while in Istanbul.

“Awe inspiring but very crowded”
Reviewed May 13, 2013

Beautiful, beautiful mosque. Absolutely breathtaking but it was very crowded. There were so many tour groups in there and that took away from the experience a bit. You have to take off your shoes and women should bring a scarf to cover their hair.

“Everything everyone else says”

What more can you say about this that other reviewers have not said. It is so beautiful, the mosaics, the domes, the stained windows.
I was just in awe of it.
