Owner description: Built between 1609-1616, this impressive mosque has six minarets. Why is it called "Blue Mosque?" There are two stories: the first, more common one is that the interior is covered in Blue İznik tiles. The second is: Many years ago, ancient sailors who sailed by the mosque on the Marmara Sea saw the blue colors of the sea reflected in the mosque.

“Stunning architecture and a wonderful place”
Reviewed April 3, 2013

This is a magnificent piece of Islamic architecture but do enjoy the quiet cloisters and gardens before you go in. Walk through the entrance and then be entranced by soaring columns, blue decorated domes, soaring columns and fluted designs. It is almost too much to take in.

The crowds can be overwhelming but choose you space, pause, be silent and let the wonder of it wash over you

“Impressive on the outside and in...watch out for guides/salesman...”
Reviewed April 3, 2013

I certainly didn't detect any issues with the smell as some people have commented. This mosque is very impressive on the outside and dominates the skyline ( it also looks great at night ) and the inside shows some wonderful decoration and tile work. Yes of course you need to cover up if you are a woman and take your shoes off but it was no great inconvenience. One minor point is that we were latched onto by a man purporting to be a student wanting to practise his English but in reality his family conveniently owned a nearby carpet shop and naturally he wanted us to go there....when I said no when this became clear he stomped off in the middle of the mosque and frankly gave me a look that could have curdled milk.

“A must visit”
Reviewed April 3, 2013

The mosque is just amazing. Great display of architecture and style of that era. When you enter the mosque you are just mesmerised by the ceiling and the walls. The history of 6 pillars is quite fascinating as well. Strongly recommend to go there and spend a couple of hours sitting outside the mosque to enjoy the view
