Owner description: Built between 1609-1616, this impressive mosque has six minarets. Why is it called "Blue Mosque?" There are two stories: the first, more common one is that the interior is covered in Blue İznik tiles. The second is: Many years ago, ancient sailors who sailed by the mosque on the Marmara Sea saw the blue colors of the sea reflected in the mosque.

Beautiful internal Mosaics and external architecture. Probably the best start point for a walking tour of Sutanahmet District

“Light and bright”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 12, 2013

The many windows, soaring dome and soft colors make this a very light and bright worship space. You are asked to remove your shoes, and disposable plastic slippers are supplied. Modest clothing is required for both men and women, and women are asked to cover their hair. It is a gorgeous space. Don't miss the intricate calligraphy and the artistic tile designs.

“Be Respectful”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 12, 2013

The Blue Mosque is very imposing from outside and in a nice area.To be honest there isnt much to see.You can amble about outside there is plenty of there. When you go inside as with ALL mosques, you have to take your shoes off and be respectfully dressed and ladies wear your hair covered.Be quiet as there are always people praying and dont go beyond where it asks you not to as that is where people are praying
It has beautiful ceilings inside
There is no charge for entry

“First one I saw”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 12, 2013

Walked in it thinking its Hagia Sophia but realized what it was after I saw the real one just few steps down the Hippodrome! It's a must see. It's the moniker of Istanbul. It looks even more spectacular from the Water

“Enraptured...”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 11, 2013

The interior of the place is amazing, words cannot describe it. The depth of the power of faith here is very palpable - I believe even non-believers must feel something. Beauty and history mingle together in ways the overwhelm the senses.
