Owner description: Built between 1609-1616, this impressive mosque has six minarets. Why is it called "Blue Mosque?" There are two stories: the first, more common one is that the interior is covered in Blue İznik tiles. The second is: Many years ago, ancient sailors who sailed by the mosque on the Marmara Sea saw the blue colors of the sea reflected in the mosque.

What a wonderful, beautiful place. I am so grateful for experiencing this mosque. The people were so warm, gracious and patient in answering questions from tourists. The only negative for me was the shame I felt at the amount of western women who ignored the request to cover their heads with a scarf. I can't imagine walking in to this place of worship with that sort of arrogance. I am from the United States and would never have set foot inside without my head covered. That aside, and as a plea to future travelers, it shouldn't be missed. The simple but awesome beauty is extraordinary.

this is an amazing place to visit. There were lots of people there but once inside there was plenty of room for everyone. .It was one of the most interesting buildings we have seen. A must see !

Having two enormous Mosques side by side is an unusual opportunity, and seeing just what they could accomplish with HS with respect to what was accomplished hundreds of years later at the BM is remarkable.

When I was in Cyprus, my friend and I went to Istanbul for 2 days. What a beautiful city, the taxi ride from the airport (50 lire) was crazy, your passing through the city, there's the ancient city walls and the new buildings, plus the call to prayer. Definitely feels like another world / time. We went in June and it very hot - Blue Mosque was pretty and right across from Aiya Sophia. FYI - ladies bring ur own scarf, one is provided but everyone has probably used it at one point!
