“The best introduction to Istanbul”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 27, 2013

My wife and I are just back from a very memorable week in Istanbul. We are always keen to start city breaks with a walking tour and thanks to Salih of 'My Local Guide' we were treated to a magnificent morning with a truly personal touch. We were especially lucky as it ended up being just the two of us and Salih, on Xmas Eve. The 'Secrets of Istanbul' tour starts early at 8.30. Don't let that worry you! In fact it allows you to see the city waking up while beating the crowds at the Blue Mosque. Salih is a very knowledgable guide, clearly enjoys what he does and was great company. In addition to the main sights of Istanbul, you will also be taken to places tourists would never find - for tea and a true locals' lunch. We both agreed that this walk was the highlight of our visit to Istanbul. We strongly recommend it. Next time we'll try one of the other walks offered without hesitation!

“Glorious Istanbul Tours & Guide”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 16, 2013

We took walking tours on November 14 and 15, 2013 and thoroughly enjoyed each. Our guide Latif was wonderful. We enjoyed the intimacy of the tours and the opportunity to talk with Latif who shared his broad knowledge of Istanbul's and Turkey's history, culture and way of life. He was easy and candid to talk to. We were fortunate to have him as our guide on both walks and we sadly left him after our second walk as if we were leaving a long-time friend.
The "Secrets of Istanbul" walk hit most of the high-points of Sultanahmet that simply must be seen. The included lunch in a local neighborhood and the hookah/tea breaks gave us the opportunity to experience local life. The "Istanbul Heritage" was just as enjoyable while being quite different. We spent more time in the old residential neighborhoods outside the main tourist areas, visiting local bakeries for snacks that we took to near-by tea rooms. A highlight was the ride in the funicular up to Cafe Pierre Loti where we took in the magnificent view of the Golden Horn and the hills of "modern" Istanbul on the other side. This tour gives you a much fuller insight into the multi-ethnic history/life of the city. It involves a good deal of walking (including up and down hills) as well as using buses, ferries and the funicular, but is well worth it. We would do both tours again and recommend them, and Latif, to others.

“So glad we got to experience Istanbul with Salih”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 8, 2013

We were lucky enough to spend a day on a walking tour of Old Istanbul with our guide, Salih Cam. His depth of knowledge about history, culture, politics, and religion was extremely impressive. But what made the experience truly unique was his obvious passion for his vocation and his willingness to share. He had very educated opinions on everything from ancient Greek history, to the modern politics in Turkey. He took us to mosques we would not have seen on our own, and we learned a lot by seeing the city and country through a local set of eyes. We plan to return to Turkey and Salih has already offered to help us coordinate our travels, and we will absolutely trust him to do so. It is also worth mentioning his obvious passion for the English language which is a hobby for him to learn how to communicate difficult concepts for his work in the proper language. Highly recommend.

“Istanbul Heritage Tour”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 2, 2013

Recommend this tour to anyone who wants to get off the beaten path and see some real working-class Istanbul neighborhoods. We visited Balat and Feder neighborhoods, the old Christian Orthodox church, local tea shops, a cruise down the Golden Horn inlet and a cable ride to the top of the hill and a majestic view overlooking the Golden Horn and Istanbul. Salih was an outstanding guide. Very personable, relaxed, especially knowledgeable about Istanbul's history and cultural lore.

did the old city tour and it was real good. Our favorite part was Leteif bringing us to this local hangout near the grand bazaar that is a hookah and tea place. We went back 2 other times at night on our own and it's 90% locals and it just has a great atmosphere and met some great new friends there.
