“Dogançay Müzesi, Balo Sok No 42, Beyoglu”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 9, 2013

I recommend to tourists visiting Istanbul not to miss this small but very fulfilling contemporary museum opened by the world-known artist Burhan Dogançay himself, several years ago. It is situated in a renovated old apartment block on Balo Street, at the heart of the pedestrian street of Istiklal Caddesi (Beyoglu, ancient Pera), so easy to visit. Dogançay has lived many years in New York and has a painting exhibited at the Moma, as well as in other cities around the world. You can also see his work at the Istanbul Modern Museum's permanent collection, which is certainly another place to visit for tourists so as to get familiar with modern Turkish art.

A visit to Istanbul should include the Dogancay Museum. It is located in the crazy district of Beyoglu - an oasis of beauty and culture. Burhan Dogancay was not only a fabulous contemporary painter but a photographer as well. The museum is housed in a restored historical building - a work of art itself. The diverse works of Burhan are sure to delight all. The museum also has a wonderful gift store!

“A unique museum, dedicated to the works of Burhan Dogancay”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 19, 2013

Dogancay Museum, in Beyoglu, located halfway between Taksim and Tunel is a well designed museum displaying the different stages of late Turkish Contemporary artist Burhan Dogancay.

At the end of a street (Balo) cutting ever busy pedestrianized Istiklal Caddesi, Dogancay Museum is a must for those who are interested in Contemproray Turkish Art. The son of a well known painter, Burhan spent many years abroad mostly in Newyork, and in his late years decided to spend more time in Turkey and opened this museum to display the development of his artistery through his personal collection.

150 years old Beyoğlu building is renovated in 2004 to serve as a museum . No fee for entrance , a small yet impressive gift corner, friendly museum keeper, chance to have a cup of tea in a cozy tea room with a collection of photos taken during artist's travels . The small museum is on four floors, where the elevator takes you to the top floor of earlier works and a corner dedicated to his well known fathers paintings and some of his father's personal belongings. As you decend you can witness his artistic evolution, in well lit rooms with a good selection of his various techniques, with proper explanation.

If you are into art do not miss this small yet important museum, located in the middle of road for Beyoglu visitors where there also are several galeries to stop by around the museum.

No parking not even standing on the tiny street, you can reach by a cab if not walking or use subway (same distance from taksim or sishane stops).Open everyday 10am 6pm , do not forget to sign the museum journal before you exit.
