“What a delight”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 4, 2013

Turgay, the eccentric (yet lovable) owner was truly awesome. You dine in his house, with spectacular views of the city (and his adorable cats - I'm not a cat person, but there's 1 or 2 that run around). He went to the fish market for us at 4:30am and picked out some of the most delicious Agean seabass I've ever tasted. He put together a luncheon meal for us that was delicious. After 10 mesas (small plates of food), we had two fish courses - absolutely awesome, desert, and all the raki, lemonchello and wine we could drink. Turgay is so interesting - he's Turkish, lived in Italy and spends half the year in Thailand - he has great stories and his food is even more enjoyable. I've travelled the world, and this is one spot that I'll definitely remember.

“A delight in every way”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 4, 2012

This hidden delight is tucked upstairs in the old town down near the little Sofia mosque. Turguy the owner is a brilliant chef and great company. He loves to talk about archeological history in particular but also about Italy where he lived for 20years.

And it shows in his cooking. Mazes, pastas cooked to perfection. And the Tiramsu is to die for. He also recommends great wine choices.

You won't do better in Turkey.

And he decor is done perfectly with lots of lots of black and white prints from cinematic history, ESP Italian movies.

“Early Doors . . .”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 18, 2012

Arrived very early, about 6.00 PM on our first night in Istanbul, having picked up the recommendation from Trip Adviser. It was all a bit random but we're quite comfortable with a bit of chaos. The views are nice on the top tier, but be prepared for it to get quite chilly once the sun goes down - even in late August. The next tier down, when it got too cold, was warm, inviting and delightful. I had a lovely pasta dish and my partner had very well cooked fish. Having read some reviews, I think it is possible for the bill at the end of the night to be inexplicable; lots of things turn up that aren't requested, and there's no real way of knowing whether you're paying for them or not. However we were happy that we only paid for what we ordered. There's definitely some talented cooking going on there but wouldn't recommend going there if you're on a budget. As an aside, the wine is very expensive.

“Stunning view, frustrating evening”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 2, 2012

You can't book for this restaurant and despite being turned away the night before, the great reviews saw us back there the following night and we managed to get a table after a while (there are two levels of seating), albeit sharing with another couple. We'd been in Istanbul for 4 days and were desperate for something other than kebabs (despite how delicious they were) and the menu on the wall outside showed a lovely selection and very reasonable prices. We were open to a more relaxed restaurant service and flamboyant owner, even the winding stairs and chaotic kitchen washed over us but the evening quickly became frustrating.

The problems began with the drinks when, after waiting a good half an hour for them (watching the owner sit and chat with other customers instead of asking the waitress to bring our drinks), I wasn't given the drink I asked for and was laughed at when I asked for something other than wine. It took ages for the owner to come back and take our order - we let him chose a fish dish, following advice from other reviews, but I chose a specific starter and a mushroom risotto main. We didn't get the starter we asked for, instead we got a selection of roasted vegetable type dishes which were ok but nothing special. The main dishes...well, needless to say I didn't get the pasta dish I asked for (perhaps he can only cook the one mushroom pasta dish that previous customers always mention, as that's what I got - too salty!) but my partner got a lovely, if not small, fish.

Slightly confused as to how we felt by the whole experience, it wasn't until the bill came that it really opened the wounds and rubbed a heap of salt in them; about three times as much as we'd been paying during the rest of our visit, for food we didn't order and prices totally made up to what's on the menu outside. Ridiculous! Not feeling like we could contest anything as the owner was sat smoking and being another table's new best friend, we paid (although it was about half an hour until they took our payment and gave us change) and swiftly left.

Judging by the look on the couple's faces next to us, who were given coffee, desert and wine they didn't ask for, they were also a bit narked by the bill. I felt like the "home cooking" and chilled out friendly, best matey atmosphere is a way to soften you before the bill comes. No mates rates here.

“Once upon a time, a magical night”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 29, 2012

Once upon a time, two French girls discovered an amazing place in Istanbul : Nostra Casa. Here time stops. Located between Bosphorus, Blue Mosque, Little Aya Sofia and the ancient wall of the Hippodrome, we had a magical time !
The owners are very friendly and food is excellent. The best meal we had in Turkey ! Come, take a seat outside, and just enjoy the most beautiful view of Istanbul !
