“Grand Durmaz- good value, with friendly staff and handly location”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 14, 2014

We stayed at the Grand Durmaz in March 2014. The hotel is located ~50M from the tram station "Aksaray", which is a 15 minute trip (four stops) from the Peninsula sites "Hayia Sofia" and the "Topkapı Palace".

The hotel is clean, quite and kept in good order. The staff were very friendly and helpful, in a courteous and sincere way. The place has the atmosphere of a small/family hotel.

The rooms are of good size and well equipped: The WiFi works; there's a mini-bar and room-safe and TV. The bathroom was large with separate shower and bath. The beds were
comfortable and clean.

The breakfast is good and plentiful - of the eastern type: no pancakes or fried eggs etc. from a more western style menu.

Overall, we thought it good value and a good place to stay for those looking for a base for moving about Istanbul.

Room Tip: If you're a light sleeper, it might be best to stay away from the street behind the Hotel: this...

excellent hotel Very polite and friendly staff, no problem communicating in English, clean rooms. Need something ? Just ask the guys at the reception the room service is very good . breakfast is rich but omelettes are not always available and should have to pay extra (ridiculous, no).

Room Tip: Rooms are quieter

This hotel is not comfortable to me because of the following:
1- The staff working most of them don't know English loose of communication
2- The manager attitude was bad
3- Noise of street, rooms are not sound proof
4- wi fi connection week
5- construction are surrounded and its very noisy all day
6- I don't recommend this hotel to anyone

There are plenty of hotels better than this one

Hotel location is good for shoppers. An improvements of sound proofing is a must since the noise from the street can be very annoying. Room carpet is stained and need major cleaning or replacement. The bed is acceptable and comfortable. The worst of all was the attitude of the hotel manager Mr. Mehmet who acts as if he is the master and no one to argue his decision when hotel business is dependent totally on behavior. I have been in many world wide hotels but this is the first time to see such unacceptable behavior. For sure I will never go back to this hotel although some may think its good.

Room Tip: Treat the hotel manager with great humbleness and request rooms away from the streets

Great location and staff were too friendly and the price was fair. Too near to the tramvay station and new hotel with nice breakfast served in buffet. I suggest this hotel to everybody looks for a clean, fair price and super location hotel.

My girlfriend and I just spent 5 days/4 nights at Grand Durmaz. Since the very first moment we got into our standard room (which costs 180 euros per night), we noticed the room was narrow and had a small window with a 'nice view' of a wall, so we immediately called the reception and asked for a change. On the phone, the receptionist said there was no problem and they would have done it the day after because the hotel was fully booked. The day after, around 2 pm, we stopped by the reception and reminded them about the room change. They told us we woke up too late for the change and that the change would have happened the day after. The morning after, around 11 am, once again, we talk at the reception with the manager, who told us that a room change would have been impossible because the hotel was once again fully booked. He also told us that a room change would have been possible if we booked our room directly through their website, instead of doing so using a tour operator. We had to discuss with him for over 20 minutes, telling him that it wasn't our fault if we were assigned with an unconfortable and poky room. Everyday we also had to deal with different people from the Reception who were bad addressing our request, and every single time we had to start explaining everything from the beginning.
Last but not least, during our stay, one of the employee told us that our checkout would have been postponed at 1 pm instead of noon, since it was New Year, but that's not what actually happened. In fact, around 12.20 pm we got a phone call from the reception saying "Check out, check out", alerting us that we were late and had to leave our room.
In short, it took us 3 days to get a different and better room, and any simple request was constantly a struggling process. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone.
