Good hotel very close to main sights, restaurants and markets. Large, comfortable and clean room (we stayed at triple room). Breakfast is not great, but fine. Very helpful staff Aziz and Natalia. I recommend it.

First off, let me say that we did not have reservations at this hotel, but at another hotel owned by the same family. That hotel was closed for renovations when we arrived, so they switched us over to this hotel. Despite having emailed to ask if we needed an airport transfer, they did not advise us of the switch in hotels ahead of time. The result was that we walked almost a mile downhill to the other hotel with our luggage and then could not find it, as the sign was not there. A kebab shop owner called the hotel owners and they came and got us and we walked all the way back up the steep hills. When I mentioned that they could have told us ahead of time, he shrugged and said "well, you only have to walk it once". This was our introduction to Istanbul.

As other reviews have mentioned, Metin Han is not so much a hotel as a set of rooms sandwiched between shoe factories on an industrial street. The location was generally convenient for exploring the Sultanahmet area, but it was odd to be in an industrial area that was deserted at night. It was safe enough there, but the atmosphere was not great.

The room was generally clean and well-kept. There was, however, a disconcerting sewer smell in the bathroom that was fairly constant. We tried to keep the door closed, but the person who came to clean our room always left it open, so we would return to a room that smelled like sewage. Our room also had two beds, one of which was perfectly comfortable and one of which was old and hard.

On the day we left, our flight was not until early afternoon, so we were in the hotel packing up for most of the morning. Around 9:00, the shoe factories kicked into gear and lots of thumping from machinery could be heard in our room. This place would not be a good choice if you wanted to sleep in very much. Also, we decided to use the shared shuttle that the hotel owners said they could arrange. It ended up being a bad choice. We were told that we would be the last ones on and that it was only 20 minutes to the airport. The van was almost half an hour late and we had to stand around down the street waiting for it, and then they drove around in circles for what seemed like forever as they picked up more people. Next time, I would just take a taxi.

Overall, we did not care much for this place. It was fine for sleeping, but the atmosphere didn't do much for our view of Istanbul as a city.

Great location and value for money. The spacious rooms are clean, cleaned daily and exactly what you would expect from a 3 star hotel. You get fresh towels daily and there is a hairdryer in the room.

It does not look like a hotel (more like a renovated house with lots of rooms) but service (Aziz) is outstanding. We arrived and left in the early hours of the morning, so I saved myself the trouble and asked Aziz to organise airport transfers for us. Based on what others have written about taxis not being able to find this place, this saved me a lot of hassle. In the morning during the week, you will find that the cobblers downstairs will start working so if you want to sleep in, bring earplugs. Best things I did for myself on this trip!

There is no elevator but Aziz or the person who lets you in when you ring the doorbell will happily carry this up or down for you.

Breakfast is very basic but one cannot expect too much - bread, jam, fruit, coffee and tea.

Location wise it is perfect walking distance to the Blue Mosque, Hagia Sofia, Topkapi Palace, Grand Bazaar, supermarket and 3 min walk to the tram and main shopping area.

Aziz also helped us with everything from where to find the best turkish delight, how to not get ripped off and where to buy scarves, Turkish tea, coffee, kebap, where and how to get tram tickets ... absolutely anything! I cannot speak more highly of him.

Room Tip: Organise airport transfers with the hotel, bring earplugs and your own soap.
