“great location and friendly staff!”
Reviewed February 26, 2013

We spent lovely 8 days in hotel Kumru in October 2012. The hotel is easily accesible by public transport right from the airport (ca. 45 min. trip) and located right in the heart of the Sultanahment historic district. That makes all the key city landmarks in this part of town right within a short walk. So this hotel can serve as great headquarters for seeing Istanbul and taking advantage of all its treasures. The hotel is run by an Amarican lady form Boston and her Turkish friend. They make w very welcoming and friendly duo of managers. They offer a lot of advice on the sights to see, restaurants to visit and a handful of guide books. Breakfasts are served at the rooftop terrace - what a wonderful way to start the day overlooking th city in a gentle breeze. The food is plentiful and very tasty - just somethong you need to accumulate energy necessary for a busy day. The room and bathroom were very clean. All the interiors are freshly redecorated. The hotel is not cheap, which for some could be a significant dwonside, but well worth checking it out due to all the above mentioned "upsides" :)

When arriving in a new city one should always be met by the people from the Kumru Hotel. Efficient, friendly, articulate and very welcoming. One is quickly introduced to a spacious room with color and light. Melissa and Abdul, the owners of this year old boutique hotel have a personal touch that makes Istanbul accessible and easy, they have wonderful staff and a breakfast to die for! Take the plunge and stay with them and visit this amazing city. Quite wonderful.

Room Tip: Any of the rooms are good - I stayed in suite and it was splendid.

Our experience at the Kumru Hotel was exceptional from beginning to end, from our pick up at the airport in a comfortable van by two of their friendly staff, to the emergency drop off of our house keys at the airport on our way home. Melissa and Abdul, partners and owners, spent quite of bit of time with us orienting our family of 5 to this remarkable city, and made enthusiastic and excellent recommendations of shops, trips and restaurants. Melissa also looked out for our safety, alerting us of safe areas and taxis to avoid. The fashionably decorated family suite fit 5 adults comfortably and Melissa even found an extra hair dryer to accommodate us. The breakfast room is charming and the delicious food was a wonderful start to a busy day of sightseeing. We immediately felt at home here, where we could get a hot cup of apple tea or be helped by a staff member at any time of the day or night. The location is excellent, as we were within walking distance of all the important sites, excellent restaurants and even a supermarket. We will definitely stay here again! Thank you Abdul and Melissa for a wonderful and memorable vacation.

Kumru Hotel is part local, part international - and a perfect place to stay while visiting the city where Europe meets Asia.

Having never been to Istanbul before, my partner and I weren't sure what to expect - just that we were looking for an adventure in January. We got off the tram from the airport and found snow flakes falling all around us, the call to prayer echoing out across the city, and minarets from the most beautiful mosques punctuating the skyline. The adventures we had during the following week in Istanbul were made all the better by the amazing hospitality of our hosts and our incredibly comfortable room at Kumru Hotel.

From the first contact by email, our hosts were warm and helpful. They offered to arrange airport pick-up, and helped us figure out how to take public transit when we expressed that preference. With their instructions we were able to take the metro and tram from the airport without a problem. We took our time walking through the winding streets of Istanbul, and we arrived a little later than expected - for us this is all part of the adventure and pleasure of travel. When we arrived they welcomed us so warmly and we found out they had even sent someone to check on us in case we got lost. Depending on your travel style, if it's your first time in Istanbul and if you've got a lot of luggage you'll probably want to take a taxi from the airport. We're the pack-pretty-light-in-backpacks and walk everywhere kind of folks, so we just loved the adventure of exploring the neighborhood to find our way.

On arrival, our hosts greeted us and showed us to our room - explaining how everything works, and we immediately felt at home. The hotel is a beautiful place - a welcoming lobby, lovely marble throughout and beautiful modern rooms with great design. It is a true family owned and run B&B, but with all the amenities of a small hotel. When we got back to our room from a long day out - it was great to be able to lay down and watch TV stations from all over - Afghanistan, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Georgia, Albania and more. And in the morning, while we were getting ready, to be able to make tea and coffee in the room before breakfast - and open the windows and hear school kids playing outside. The breakfast buffet was just fantastic, a wonderful assortment of fruits, breads, cheeses, vegetables, nuts, cereal, yogurt, eggs, coffee, tea and fresh juices - any sort of dietary needs could be met by this spread - and you can have a new culinary adventure every morning. The breakfast terrace is a wonderful spot to eat, where you can look out over the city, even in winter, since it's enclosed during cold weather.

We can't wait to go back and experience this amazing city in other seasons and we'll be staying there when we do. Heading to Istanbul? Book a room at Kumru, you won't regret it.

Here's some advice for your trip based on our experiences:

Be prepared to wake up at or before dawn along with the crowing roosters, meowing cats and finally the beautiful and haunting first call to prayer of the day - they are part of the wonderful texture of life in Istanbul - enjoy them! It's a great way to start the day early and you never have to worry about setting an alarm.

Get directions from the front desk, or from locals when you're out - we found Google Maps to be just plain wrong over and over again about the locations of places, especially restaurants.

Explore the neighborhoods around the hotel - the people who live there are incredibly sweet and welcoming, and there are pleasant surprises around every corner.

Want to visit a Hamam (turkish bath)? Go local, check out the one around the corner for the authentic experience (Kadirga) - and remember, it's not supposed to be a "spa," so don't expect one.

Take the ferry to Asia and explore another continent - then take it again to another part of Asia and explore again! If you go to Kadıköy, eat at Çiya - an amazing restaurant - probably the best we ate at anywhere in the city - and wonderful for vegetarians (which is true of most food in the region).

And finally, push your comfort zone and explore the city outside of the guidebook sights. Our favorite day was when we took the ferry to Eyüp Sultan Mosque, an important pilgrimage site bustling with devout muslims. We then walked back to the ancient city walls of Constantinople, and through the dense and winding Roma neighborhoods, also crossing very conservative muslim districts where all the women were in full hijab - we loved exploring this hilly territory where we were the only tourists around. After visiting Chora church, we walked all the way back to the hotel with a night-time stop at the huge and beautiful Fatih Cami (Fatih Mosque) and the Roman Aquaducts.

If you've never been this far east, or never been this far west - Istanbul is a great place to start. And whether you're looking for adventure off the beaten path or a relaxing visit to the famous sights of this ancient city - staying at Kumru will give you a welcoming, comfortable place to rest after your days of exploration where you will feel truly at home in Istanbul!

The hotel has it all. Great location, our room had a great view with windows that open wide to the city. The hotel breakfast was the best I've ever had. The owners were nice and very helpful. Very close to the turkish baths, which Melissa and Ahmed recommended. The room was pretty good size, with comfortable beds and down comforters.

Room Tip: Top floor is the vest view.

This bed and breakfast is darling, in the heart of all you want to see. 10 minute walk to the Blue Mosque and the Hagia Sophia, it's ideal for car-less travellers. The breakfast spread alone is worth the stay. And that's to say nothing of the hospitality. The owners were at breakfast each morning to greet their guests and were at our beckon call. This place is awesome. I'll definitely be staying here again next time I'm in Istanbul.
