If you are interested in knowing more about Sufism and the Whirling Dervishes we recommend that you contact Les Arts Turc, a cultural tour company based near Aya Sofia in Istanbul. They arranged for us to visit a private Sufi meeting one evening which was an extraordinary experience and we felt very privileged. Our visit commenced with a fascinating history lesson from one of the older members, whose personal charm and deep involvement in his faith was wonderful. Then a group of younger male members of the Sufi group allowed us to witness their moving into a trance and movements as whirling dervishes. It was an astounding experience. Older members then moved into their own trance and chanting sessions. By the end of the evening we felt suitably immersed in and fascinated by Sufism without being subjected to a "tourist" version that is available elsewhere in Istanbul.

This workshop was well organized by Alp Akhasin. Janet gave us a lot of inspiration and teached us a complete choreography---it`s a pity I forgot most of it. Thanks for all! La Lisa, Bellydance school Shekinah Holland

I took a turkish marbling class. The teacher of the class, coordinator and the owner, all people I met here were very friendly and helpful and I really had a fun time. I would recommend this class for anyone who are looking for experiencing in turkey arts and cultures, or for anyone just looking for having good time at a cozy place in Istanbul with nice people: )

I did a paper marbelling workshop (which is called 'ebru' in Turkey) in this gallery. The workshop took place in a very cozy and familiar atmosphere with Betul Hanım who is a very lovely teacher. You will just feel at home there. Doing the workshop and painting on water was just amazing and I produced a couple of very nice paintings. Betul knows her job very well and I am sure also other workshops with her will be great. Besides the workshops Les Arts Turcs also offers tours to watch the sema (whirling derwish dance), which is a must see when you come to Turkey. And if you need some nice Souvenirs for your beloved then have a look at the shop downstairs. Betul, her husband and their students are selling their lovely handmade arts there.

Having arranged a calligraphy class with Les Art Turcs online we arrived at their offices unsure of what awaited us.

We were taken to a lovely studio above a crafts shop very close to Topkapi Palace / Hagia Sofia where we spent a few lovely hours with a really friendly married couple who guided us through our first rather tentative efforts at calligraphy with great patience.

It was so nice to take the early stages of a new skill away with us. But it was equally lovely to have a chance to step very slightly out of the tourist run and meet and talk with local crafts people.

I recommend this to anyone with even the slightest artistic inclinations who wants a break from the carpet sellers and sights. It's a super way to, even very briefly, get under the skin of the city. Just lovely.
