Owner description: Sufi Music Concert & Whirling Dervishes Ceremony Istanbul Whirling Dervishes hosts regular Sufi music concerts and whirling dervish performances at the Dervish Dede Efendi House in Sultanahmet. This is a spiritual and informative tribute to 13th century mystic, poet and philosopher Mevlana C. Rumi and his followers. The Istanbul Whirling Dervishes programme starts with an introduction speech about Rumi, followed by Sufi Music and the 4-salam whirling dervish ceremony, giving life to 800 years tradition on the stage with their determination and faith for being a lifelong follower of Mevlevi tradition. Guests are welcome to ask questions and talk to the musicians and dervishes after the ceremony. The Istanbul Whirling Dervishes whirling dervish ceremony is performed every Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday at 7.30Pm at the Dervish Dede Efendi House in Sultanahmet. The venue has capacity for 100 and prior reservations are recommended.

We were looking for a place where we could see the dervish dance, finally, by chance we came accross the whirling dervishes performance that taken place at Dede Efendi House, which was used to be a dervish and sufi music composer house in Ottoman times.

What makes this ceremony different than any other performances in Istanbul is the atmosphere you feel while watching the servishes and the music played by a live sufi music band.

Overall, I had a great, unique experience so that I can suggest those who seek for a real local experience.

I booked tickets on The Center site from Moscow before the trip.
The action itself was held in Hammamizade Ismail Dede Efendi Jose at Ahirkapi st. No: 17 , 15-minute walk from Sultanahmet . This is not a show and not a concert. This performance is The Sacred Causerie (Mawlavi Dervish Music Performance) and Sacred Encounter (Mawlavi Whirling Dervishes Ritual / Ceremony). Musicians play and sing ancient music written in the 13th century poet, theologian and Sufi master Mevlana C. Rumi. Then go dervishes begin their sacred dance. Very fascinating! Entourage , dusk , music and spinning figures - unforgettable! This impressive practice is built on the foundations of aesthetic symbolism, from the details of dervish's dress to the fulfillment of the ceremony. Rumi believed passionately in the power of music, dance and poetry as a path for reaching Creator and since the eighth century, Rumi's teachings have been developed by his followers.
The House of Dervish Dede Efendi is a most suitable place for the spiritual atmosphere of Sema ritual.Bridging the past and present through his music, our musicians play his legacy, bringing you a unique experience in the center of the city of İstanbul.

So beautiful, it brought stillness and connection with the Spirit. A very ancient tradition kept alive.

Having seen the Whirling Derwishes featured on my favorite TV reality show, I just had to go see them for myself while on vacation in Istanbul. I made a reservation on the Internet and received a prompt confirmation which included ceremony descriptions, ticket pick-up instructions and directions. The day of our reservation I realized that the e-mail listed two different locations. Luckily my local friend was able to figure out where to go and we found the venue. Their PC was down (there was no actual office, two men were selling the tickets at a table in front of the gate) so my reservation was pretty much useless. Luckily we went much earlier than instructed and there were still tickets available. The performance time had also changed to one hour earlier. The ticket price was 40 TL per person (around $22). Aside from that confusion, the hour-long Whirling Derwish ceremony was a wonderful experience I will never forget. I enjoyed listening to the soothing, traditional music and following the intricate specifics and meaning of the dance sequences. The old hall was also beautiful as was the garden outside. I recommend getting in line at the hall entrance as soon as the gate opens because the seats are not assigned, and there are several columns around the stage which could partially obstruct one's view. Lining up as close to the front as possible will assure a good seat. Definitely a worthwhile and memorable event!

I and my 2 daughters were at the whirling dervish ceremony at the Dervish Efendi House in Sultanahmet, Istanbul. They say it is one of the authentic & traditional dervish house. It was a beautiful haunting experience. It is based on Rumi's philosophy & its a spiritual tribute to him. This Sufi music concert starts with a brief introduction to Sufism & then the dancing begins on a stage in the center of the hall which has a capacity of about 100 people. There are 5 male dancers with white flowing robes with tall pointed caps whirling anti-clockwise the whole 75-80 minutes, with a mystic music in the background made by a group of musicians on a smaller stage on one side. Peculiar, distinctive instruments. The music & the dancing is meditative, spiritual, mysterious and wonderful. One remains engrossed in the atmosphere and when it ends one is left deep in the magic and fascinating depths of this extraordinary experience. Its value is much more than the 50 Turkish Lira we had each to pay to get in.
