Marti Apartments gets my highest recommendation for a base in Istanbul, and as I said in the title, it should serve as a blueprint for other, lesser accommodation options. Everything has been so thoughtfully put together by the owners (a very friendly and helpful Turkish/American couple), leaving very little to be desired.
1. The location is ideal, a hop away from Taksim Square and Istiklil (sp.?) boulevard: a great walking street lined with a very large assortment of restaurants, coffee shops, galleries, and an antiquated funicular system that is a lot of fun to use. A great restaurant choice along this street is 'Havore', as recommended to us by Sue, the owner. We returned to Havore no less than three times over three days, definitely try it out! The location of Marti Apartments is also very close to the airport bus terminal, which takes you directly to Ataturk International every twenty minutes or so. The airport bus is only 5 to 10 minutes walking distance away.
2. The design of the apartments - one can immediately see that a lot of thought has gone into the design and layout of Marti Apartments. They are very functional, with a totally usable kitchen (should you want to prepare a breakfast and coffee at home). The bed is comfortable, there is an electronic safe, and good air conditioning. The free wifi is fast and reliable, and the free laundry service (self service) was a much appreciated feature. The apartments are located in a nice side street that has a quiet, relaxed feel to it, and it felt like a totally safe neighborhood. There is a convenience store literally 20 seconds away by foot, with a great selection of fresh fruit and other Turkish assortments.
I cannot recommend Marti highly enough, and should we return to Istanbul (I hope we do, it was a fantastic city), we know where we will be staying. It checks all of the boxes. Thanks for a great time!
