“Harbiye Residence - A Breath Of Fresh Air”
Reviewed November 21, 2011

This hotel, recently appointed to a very high standard, truly is a rose between thorns. Booked on the basis of reviews from this very site, we were expecting it to be adequate at worst, but we were not expecting it to exceed our expectations by as much as it did!

A ten to fifteen minute stroll (albeit uphill!) from Taksim Square, the Harbiye Residence is exceptionally clean, very comfortable and, most importantly, nice and QUIET (apart from the early prayer calls from the nearby minaret). Breakfast provided consisted of a good assortment of cheeses, cured meats, salad, fruit, nuts, cereal, choice of bread (brown/white/toasted/simit/croissant . . ), plenty of fruit juice, tea, coffee, milk, eggs and all the condiments you could wish for.

The staff were extremely welcoming and accommodating, always greeting us with a smile and happy to assist with any queries we had.

Just over the main road is a very handy Dolmuş halt too, with regular services to Örtakoy, Nişantaşi, Beşiktaş etc.

All-in-all an absolutely superb experience and we will be booking again!

I spent four nights at HR last week. I'm not sure there is much I can add to other reviews. This is a modern hotel; rooms are spacious and fitted with refrigerator and some cooking facilities; everything is very clean; a good "continental" breakfast spread is available each morning, with simple cooked dishes such as omelette also available.

It is not possible to praise the staff too highly. Everyone is very warm and welcoming, nothing is too much trouble. They are outstanding.

The hotel is not located in one of the hotspots for tourist accommodation (that is, Taksim or Sultanahmet) so there are not dozens of restaurants on the same block. However there are a few in the area, and plenty of small grocery shops that are open all hours.

The location is about fifty metres down a small steep side street off a main thoroughfare - Cumhuriyet Caddesi - between Taksim and Nisantasi, near the military museum and Macka Parki, and convenient for the Istanbul Conference Centre. It's a short walk to Nisantasi, a fashionable shopping and restaurant district mostly patronised by Istanbul residents, or to the transport and tourist hub of Taksim. Touristic visitors should be aware that the HR is some distance from the main tourist sites of the Topkapi peninsula (Ayasofya, blue mosque, bazaars) - although not much further than hotels in Taksim - and should expect either to spend some time walking or on public transport, or to take the occasional inexpensive taxi ride. If you have business in the area, it's an excellent location.

The one small reservation I had was that the bed was rather soft, and having a bad back, I didn't sleep as well as I do on a harder mattress.

Room Tip: Higher floors have a pleasant view over the Dolapdere district.

we stayed at HR for five days in 24 to 28 October 2011. it is centrally placed, convenient, comfortable, neat n clean, hotel with caring staff. Furniture is cozy, kitchen is up to date including refrigerator, microwave, cooking utensils especially useful for Indians who preferred to cook their own food or to heat ready to cook preparations.
Safe for family
we wish all the best and expect the same hospitality continues ever.

We stayed at Harbiye recently for 7 days. I must say our experience has been extremely wonderful. This hotel is clean, cozy and very efficient. Their customer service is excellent and they are very accommodating to guest requests. They also have English speaking staff which is extremely important when you are visiting Istanbul. Basar, Emre, Irfan & Ramazan along with their other staff were very friendly and they helped in making this trip great.

We also took some tours suggested by the staff at Harbiye and we had a really good experience with both the night cruise as well as the half day morning tour. Service is available at all hours. The location is very secure and is close to Taksim square which is an added benefit. There are many shops and restaurants at the main road nearby. The only negative was that this hotel is situated at the midst of a very steep slope which was a problematic for my parents but most of the taxis dropped us and picked us from the door. However some of them didn't come so my parents had to walk up the stairs beside the slope. But since there are so many positives to this hotel I am willing to ignore the steep slope. As it is the entire Istanbul is made on hilly landscape.

The hotel itself is very clean and has modern style furniture. We took a family room for three which had a double bed, a sofa bed, table chairs, and even the stove, microwave etc which is very helpful if you want to make your own tea. The breakfast was good, they serve traditional Turkish breakfast. Overall it was good value for money.

Harbiye Residence will be my recommendation for all travelers who want a homely environment and also an upscale service.

Beware of the taxi drivers and the local restaurants who will try to rip you off because they know you cannot understand Turkish. Its best if you hire an English agency or a guide. But as far as the hotel was concerned we only have positive reviews in all aspects. Rarely you find something so close to being the best.

Room Tip: Family rooms are a good value for money and are clean and spacious
