Our day with Olga was a perfect complement to the rest of our stay in Istanbul. We learned a lot while having a lovely time talking about our trip, our lives, food or whatever else comes up when people meet and spend time making food and socializing. The shopping was a pleasure: aided by great weather, we were able to appreciate the beautifully displayed produce in the open air market in Kadakoy (on the Asian side of Istanbul) and Olga's excellent observations about what makes one choice more valuable than another. We learned how to eat Baklava so as to get all the ingredients working together and the Baklava itself was so much better than any I have had before that I have to reconsider the status of all my favorite desserts and put it at the top. Olga did not rush the shopping or the tasting and so we relaxed and talked and grew openly inquisitive about the food, the neighborhood, and the nature of the market compared to other options in Istanbul. After shopping we took the quaint tram to Olga's apartment in the same neighborhood and made three excellent dishes that suited our vegetarian requirements and made a beautiful meal. Wine was served with it and we sat and talked for some time after finishing. Olga's instruction was easy going and we felt at home while chopping, cooking, etc... Olga got us back to the ferry and we rode back full and happy.
