“Nice ambience but bland food”
Reviewed May 31, 2013 via mobile

We went there with our 2 little kids for a late lunch. This restaurant is tucked up in a hilly alley street metres from the Blue mosque & Hagia Sophia. Nice fitout and excellent service. However unfortunately i have to say the food was only ok. We got a mezze plate first up with freshly baked bread. Bread was awesome but mezze plate was bland, except for the chilli & tomato bit. Next we got our main meal, our much anticipated Testi kebab. The live cooking and then the smashing of the clay pot was spectacular. But the meat then tasted very bland...needed more salt and spice.

“Unexpected Delight With Beautiful Views”
Reviewed May 28, 2013

One could easily assume being right near Sultanahmet Square with the myriad of other restaurant offerings all hawking what at first glance is the same menu geared towards tourists, Palmiye would be nothing special......but you know what they say about 'assume'.....we actually stumbled across this gem, we were hungry but not knowing what we wanted for a mid-afternoon lunch. A shout of 'We have puffy bread' caught our attention, as we'd heard of this Anatolian treat, and upon learning they had an upstairs, outdoor patio we decided to give it a try assuming (there's that word again) the view would be great and the food average.

View: with the Aya Sofia on the left, Blue Mosque on the right, Sea of Marmara in front of you, the view is idyllic.

Service and menu: Excellent on both accounts. Attentive but not too attentive service, water glasses promptly refilled as well as other beverages, and very patient as they helped explain some of the dishes to us. Menu a varied selection with dishes for both carnivore and vegetarian....however Istamboulians know how to cook veggies our recommendation would be order anything veggie and you will enjoy it. Our party ordered some cold mezes for starters, sea bass, 'turkish tortellini' (the name escapes me, cheese-filled tortellini with a delicious yogurt-based thick sauce), and moussake which I thought the best I'd ever had as it did not have the gloppy bechamel sauce one so often finds with this dish. There were also beef and lamb kebabs and chicken on the menu but we did not sample these. And yes the Anatolian Puffy Bread was crisp and delicious, a very nice treat.

Dress Code: In the middle of the afternoon, patrons were not formally dressed but smart casual.....I imagine in the evening one would want to dress up a bit more than lunch.

Price: For the moussake, 2 glasses of wine, a share of mezes the bill was ~17.00 U.S.

Value: The combination of all of the above has placed Palmiye on the 'must eat here again' on our next trip to Istanbul.

“Great food with an even better view!”
Reviewed May 27, 2013

Some friends and I kinda stumbled upon the Palmiye prior to a visit to the Cistern. One of the restaurants on the corner was under renovations and the paint fumes were overwhelming all the nearby restaurants. We decided to take a chance on the Palmiye because of their rooftop terrace. Imagine our surprise when we got to the top! We were just trying to escape the paint fumes and instead we had a mostly private lunch with a stunning view of the Aya Sofya, Blue Mosque and the beautiful blue sea. The service was top-notch, the food was great and the prices were reasonable. I would visit the Palmiye again in a heartbeat.

“Great place with great service”
Reviewed May 25, 2013

I visit this restaurant everytime when I'm back in Istanbul because of it's amazing roofterrace where the sight of the Haghia Sofia and Blue Mosque is taking your breath away for a while. Go sit there in the sun and enjoy the good quality of the food and the view. Also great about this place is the great service, thank you all and especially Ridvan. He is the best!
