Owner description: When it comes to exploring a city’s authentic dining scene, while the stomach should ideally serve as the best compass, the truth of the matter is that it’s hard to find your way without good local advice. That’s where Culinary Backstreets’ Culinary Walks come in. In order to help you explore the world’s gastro-capitals and get off these cities’ eaten path, CB is offering (with selected partners) guided culinary walks in some of the cities we cover, starting with Istanbul, Athens, Barcelona, and Shanghai. Our culinary walks are designed to lead visitors on an eating binge through a city’s lesser-seen historic side streets and authentic markets, taking in countless hard-to-find culinary gems and, in between bites, a select number of untouristed monuments.

We so enjoyed this tour on a rainy day in mid October, as it worked to introduce us at the beginning of a two week visit, to both the European and Asian areas of Istanbul. All of the restaurants were interesting, clean as whistles, and their staffs were obviously delighted to be included on this tour, which says a lot for the Istanbul Eats Backstreet Walks Company and their relationship building.

My wife and I received as a wedding present the Two Continents Walking tour and couldn't have been happier with the gift. Our guide, Benoit, who was ten times better than guides we used to see the City's historical sites, took us to breakfast tea with local tradesmen, to a full Turkish breakfast at a restaurant frequented by Dishman and workmen, through the Karakoy fish market and then to the Asian side where we sampled candied vegetables (tomato was delicious, olives not so much), pickled everything (unripe plums for example), Turkish pizza (pide and lamacun; both amazing) and a kind of Turkish taquito. The food was either amazingly tasty or extremely interesting and something that you won't find anywhere else. Benoit knew his history of Istanbul (Ottoman, Byzantine, and Roman) top to bottom. He was basically the college professor everyone hopes for. Don't expect four star restaurants on this walk, though. We had our morning tea on a metal work bench in a han courtyard. We loved every minute of it.

We loved our walking tour of Beyoglu. Since we were staying in a different part of the city, this provided a chance to see another area. We loved sharing the experience with travelers from all over the world and getting to know them. We tried foods that we probably would not have tasted if not for the tour. When they told us that the Turkish coffee we were trying was the best in the city, it was! We had several after that didn't measure up. Don't eat before you go, there is so much food!!!!! and its all delicious.

We took two walking tours. One in Beyoglu and one called two markets-two continents. My husband and I enjoyed both tours tremendously. We were fortunate to have Benoit as our tour guide for both tours. He was clearly passionate about Istanbul, it's culture and especially it's cuisine. He took the time to explain all the history behind each dish that we sampled during our walks. Benoit was careful to give everyone on the tour as much time as they needed to rest, to ask questions, to enjoy the sites and especially to enjoy the food. I can't think of a better way to see the 'real' Istanbul where most tourists never visit. We sampled foods that we certainly would never have tried on our own. I would recommend these tours to anyone that would enjoy walking through a city such as Istanbul and learning about it's food culture. I highly recommend Benoit as your tour guide.
