Owner description: When it comes to exploring a city’s authentic dining scene, while the stomach should ideally serve as the best compass, the truth of the matter is that it’s hard to find your way without good local advice. That’s where Culinary Backstreets’ Culinary Walks come in. In order to help you explore the world’s gastro-capitals and get off these cities’ eaten path, CB is offering (with selected partners) guided culinary walks in some of the cities we cover, starting with Istanbul, Athens, Barcelona, and Shanghai. Our culinary walks are designed to lead visitors on an eating binge through a city’s lesser-seen historic side streets and authentic markets, taking in countless hard-to-find culinary gems and, in between bites, a select number of untouristed monuments.

“The 'must' walk when in Istanbul!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 10, 2013

We spent 6 hours walking, talking, and munching on the most delicious foods in Istanbul!

We had the chance to walk thought some interesting backstreets and underpasses and somehow find ourselves in front of a different delicacy each time.
Angelis is so much fun and quite the character. You have the sense that you are just walking around with an old friend rather than a guide.

Overall it was the perfect cultural tour.
I cannot wait to go back and try all other walks!

“Highlight of our trip”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 8, 2013 via mobile

Our tour was with Conni who was excellent. The tour was about 6 hours long and brought Istanbul alive for us. Absolutely fascinating and so much food. We spend the rest of rhe week revisiting the places we'd been to on the tour. Can't recommend highly enough.

“Best Part of our Trip!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 7, 2013

We had a great time on the almost day long eating tour with Istanbul Eats. Our guide was fantastic. He was native to the area and was able to answer any and all questions we had. He also was very sympathetic to any dietary restrictions and any interests we had in foods that were not on the tour (our tour group had both a vegan & nut allergy).

We are not foodies and found this tour to be the best we have ever taken- we didn't want it to end!

The tour takes you to places you would never find on your own and gives you the opportunity to try foods you might not normally try. We felt like the price was cheap considering the food we had and the knowledge of our guide.

“My most interesting day in Istanbul was the day I took this tour”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 6, 2013

This is not cheap and it's a 6 - 7 hour tour, but it's totally worth the time and money. I took the walk through the old city, and visited parts of the city and sampled some food I would not have experienced otherwise. My tour guide was Connie (lovely young lady!) and there were five people on the tour. You needn't be a foodie or even a very adventurous eater, just be willing to try a nibble here and there, and soak up the atmosphere. It was a fascinating experience and I can't recommend it more highly.

““Amazing Tour, “G” is Exceptional, Highly recommend!””
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 5, 2013

After thoroughly researching tour options for our trip to Istanbul, my wife and I settled on Backstreet Culinary Walks’ Culinary Secrets Old Tour.

We have gone on more than a dozen tours / food walks all over the world and can recommend this tour with 100% confidence. We had been on a two other great city tours the previous days and were a bit concerned that there would be some overlap given we were visiting some of the same areas. In reality, this was not the case…this tour is truly “backstreet”. We saw the city from a completely different “food” perspective. Our guide Gokcen (“G”) was very personable and his enthusiasm, knowledge and passion for the city really came through. He also shared some personal stories and anecdotes which really helped us to better understand the city and culture. We couldn't recommend his services more highly. We even walked away with copies of the Backstreet Culinary Walks guidebook which is beautifully produced with many of the places we visited. Worth every penny. Thanks G!
