Owner description: When it comes to exploring a city’s authentic dining scene, while the stomach should ideally serve as the best compass, the truth of the matter is that it’s hard to find your way without good local advice. That’s where Culinary Backstreets’ Culinary Walks come in. In order to help you explore the world’s gastro-capitals and get off these cities’ eaten path, CB is offering (with selected partners) guided culinary walks in some of the cities we cover, starting with Istanbul, Athens, Barcelona, and Shanghai. Our culinary walks are designed to lead visitors on an eating binge through a city’s lesser-seen historic side streets and authentic markets, taking in countless hard-to-find culinary gems and, in between bites, a select number of untouristed monuments.

We read the reviews prior to our trip to Turkey and was so impressed so booked before arriving.
What can I say, everything said is true. Angelis is a passionate and engaging host and the day is a cullinary delight. See a side of Istanbul that a normal tourist will not see and experience the food, atmosphere and people that ordinary Istanbulians take for granted.
A wonderfull day.
Note: don't have breakfast

Istanbuleats Old Town tour was a fantastic way to see the real Istanbul. Our guide Angelis took us through the back streets, to the shops where the locals go, and we sampled the food the locals eat. It was like being transported back in time, eating Turkish delight made by a 4th generation candy maker. Angelis was full of information about the history of local food and his passion for "the stomach" of Istanbul was infectious and we all became fans. This is a MUST DO tour if you want to catch the real flavor of Istanbul.

We recently completed the "Two Markets, Two Continents" tour and we both loved the day, the food and the milling around. There was just 4 of us on the tour with our guide, a turkish guy who has been living in Istanbul for the last decade or so. We found all the restaurants listed on trip advisor really overwhelming so this was the perfect opportunity to know what to try apart from a kebab! Also we got a lovely little book of restaurant reviews etc from the guide which we were able to use during the rest of trip.
We initially thought that the tour was pricey but having done it we both felt it was well worth it when compared to the other tourist attractions and to the overall value we both got from it.
Also I would recommend doing this tour as soon into your trip as possible - great way to start the holiday!

Food tours is one of our favorite adventures we enjoy doing in our travels around the world...it's really the only way to discover and experience a place. We signed up with Istanbul Eats Culinary Walks while in the US- discovered the tour in TripAdvisor as well as their Food Blog + Facebook page. Ansel helped us with arranging the tour- great communication via emails ( highly recommend you reserve your spot while in the US since they are very popular).

Prior to tour day, we received more emails from Ansel - confirming times, place, changes with guides, which happened with us. No biggie.

We were fortunate to have Angelis as our guide - the best food tour guide we've had. He is very passionate about his work - and you know this by the way he interacts with his daily co-workers: the street vendors, store owners, waiters, and food helpers. He is also very knowledgeable about food, the history, culture - and he brings it in full circle with a big smile! Angelis is very personable - he has a great sense of humor, witty, and just a delight to be with. After 6 hours or so, of answering questions, offering information, dealing with all personalities, and walking many miles...he was still smiling & accommodating till the end.

As the others warn you - eat a very light breakfast. drink Turkish coffee and some yogurt...to fuel yourself to keep up with Angelis. Come hungry. Bring your camera.

If you are not able to join this tour, check out their app, Culinary Eats. Very helpful with maps and reviews of the eateries. Check out their website, www.istanbuleats.com for information as well as their new book release. Noticed it was in one of the (Sultan's Palace) museum shop for purchase.

This is our first time in Istanbul and felt the language barrier would deter us from having a good experience...so we are so glad we did this tour. Istanbul Eats has made this trip a wonderful food experience and thanks to you - Angelis!

Kisses from us~ Aloha, Sharlene & Kevin.

Our tour was a major event in our visit to the city. Our guide, Megan, was really wonderful. We enjoyed not only the samplings of food but also the back streets, alleys, and neighborhoods.
