“Great location, a few small issues”
Reviewed September 5, 2012

We enjoyed our stay at the Biz Cevahir. We were on the top floor in a room with a terrace which had a great view of the Bosphorus and the Blue Mosque. It was a great place to relax at the end of the day and enjoy the sounds of the city with a great view and a drink. The room wasn't that big, but that is to be expected in this part of the city from what I understand. It had a modern decor and our room along with the whole hotel was very clean.

The location is perfect, steps to all the attractions. We were staying in the heat of July and it was great to be able to have the hotel so nearby as we were sightseeing (you will have to venture a bit further to get less touristy restaurants for dinner).

There are a few small issues that prevent me from giving this place a perfect rating:
- While the front desk clerk was friendly, his English could use some work and we didn't get many recommendations or tips. While this isn't a requirement at all hotels, this hotel is in a tourist zone and almost exclusively services international guests.
- We got some laundry done while we were there and were charged $75. Seems pretty steep considering all their other pricing and would have been nice to be warned how expensive it was going to be.
- We tried to grab a snack from room service twice in the early evening and it was never available (I'm not saying room service is needed for 5 star rating, but found it annoying that they advertised it, but didn't actually have it when we wanted it)

After going back and forth trying to decide between Sultanahmet or Taksim, we finally settled on Sultanahmet and decided to stay at this hotel because of the great reviews, pictures looked really nice, and the room with the private terrace sounded wonderful... and we didnt want to spend $700/night at the Four Seasons next door.

After checked in in the afternoon by the only front desk man who spoke very2 limited english, we were escorted to our supposedly the biggest room at the hotel with the private terrace on the very top floor (3rd floor), room 132. I was very surprised by the size and the layout of the room. It was very small as well as the bathroom, 1 small table/desk at the very small corner facing the wall, with the quite spacious terrace.

So obviously, i wasnt happy at all with the room and tried to change it to the bigger ones next door or the next one after that after looking at the fire plan floorplan. At first he said nothing was available and i tried to be more understanding and just took it. But after giving it more thoughts, the more i was unhappy with the room, it was very small! And i was thinking why we were given the smallest room in that room category, so i called back and insisted to have our room changed. It looked so much different from the pictures honestly. After 2 more times calling back and forth between my room and the front desk, finally they said we could move to the other room that we prefered on the following day.

The next day around 1 pm, we were able to move to the bigger room for the same category, number 133. It was much much better! Evrything was bigger and wider than our original roommwith a much better layout too with a much better corner terrace, left side overlooking the bosphorus and to the right was the blue mosque view, if you could overlook beyond the houses' roofs right below us. We were only on the 3rd floor.

So our new room was quite clean, it had coffee maker in the room, complimentary bottled water, and a box of chocolate every day. We were not really looking forward to the our breakfast every morning in the basement, not much selection in terms of hot breakfast, and their pastries, salad, and deli meat too was just ok. They served chai, teas and coffees, and bottled quality juices.

There were not much service in my opinion on this stay, there was hardly anybody, and it was a small hotel. But the 2 front desk guys who were there alternately were nice and polite.

Location was wonderful like everyone said, close to all attractions in sultanahmet. We were there when Ramadhan (fasting month) just started, so every single night there at sultanahmet was very crowded full with locals and tourists having picnics having dinner together with their families along with the nighltly performance and bazaar, etc.

The only above average restaurant in sultanahmet we found was The Meat House next to the hotel, the rest was just edible.

If I go back to Istanbul, I'd probably not stay at Sultanahmet and stay in Taksim instead. Sultanahmet was way too touristy and Im not used to staying at a small boutique hotel like this kinda hotel. Taksim is not too far, no more than 30 mins including the traffic even if you take the train, but very convenient, and obviously has more options for food and bigger scale hotels.

If youre used to staying at a smaller room or smaller boutique hotel and dont think you should spend US$700/ night next door at the Four Seasons then by all mean stay here. If youre not used to staying at a boutique hotel and still dont think you should spend $700/night then stay at Taksim for the same price at a real hotel with all the amenities. Besides, you could go to both mosque and palace and wonder around in sultanahmet a bit unless you want to buy the persian rugs, everything in 1 day.

Room Tip: Dont stay at room 132

I really liked this hotel. I was surprised by the high standards of the room (stayed in 5 stars hotel without this quality) and the location. 3 minute walk to Hagia Sofia but on quite street off the beaten path. There is only one reason which makes doubtfoul whether to rate it excellent: the breakfast was good but basic (and the breakfast room is in a basement with no windows, although as other reviews mention it looks bright, but it is almost all artificial. In instambul with so many great terraces, it really is the only minus). I think the upper floor rooms with their own terrace would be a great choice, and in this case please have the breakfast in the room!

Room Tip: If you can try to book for a room with terrace and get your breakfast there!

Great hotel to stay, I have stayed in many 5 star hotels in Istanbul over the years and this hotel is far the best I have ever stayed, excellent rooms, very clean, excellent bath room, very good beds and very quiet. There is really nothing I can complain about. Service is excellent as well, I will be back next time I am in Istanbul

I looked at all of the reviews and various hotels - taking in to consideration the location, amenities, price, comfort, etc. The choices were overwhelming! But, I chose the Biz Cevahir because it seemed like it was in the middle of things and the reviews were really great. I stayed here for 3 nights at the beginning of my trip and 2 more nights at the end. I couldn't have been happier to have stayed at this gem of a hotel and I couldn't recommend this hotel more.

The staff are so nice and friendly!! When I returned to the hotel for my second stay, they upgraded me to a double room (I had only booked a single). The rooms are so clean, nicely decorated and comfortable. And best, the AC works great! Trust me, this is huge as Turkey is hot hot hot!

It's the perfect location to getting to all the old city sites - it's about a 3 minute walk. Topkapi Palace is about a 5 minute walk. It's just down the small block from the 4 Seasons which charges 4x what the Biz does and while I didn't see the rooms at the 4 Seasons, I'll bet it isn't worth the extra money! The Grand Bazaar is easily walk-able (it took me about 10-15 minutes) or easily accessible by tram. The Biz Cevahir is a great place to base yourself to easily access all the sites of Istanbul whether new city or old city sites. FYI, taxis are cheap, but they make for the scariest ride of your life!

This hotel is a jewel -- a beautiful, boutique hotel designed with elegance and a creative flaire. Room 134 has a great patio view. The breakfast area is bright and modern with a nice buffet, and the hotel staff was always helpful and friendly in every way. The hotel is located on a quiet, off the beaten path street, and only one cab driver knew where it was located, so we just had the drivers drop us at The Sophia and we walked home. We were a 3 minute walk to all the sites in the old city -- no taxis needed and no trams needed.
You could spend a leisure day at The Sophia, Blue Mosque, Hippodrome and The Cistern and be a walk away to get home any time of the day. There are plenty of taxis all around the sites to take you to the other sites -- Topkapi Palace, Archaeology Museum, Kariye Church Museum, Spice Bazaar (much smaller than Grand Bazaar but great smells), Galata Tower (great view of city), House Cafe in the House Hotel on Bosphorus for a beautiful outside meal on the water (make reservations to get a table on the outside deck) ,AND the best shwarma sandwich in the city (from someone who lives in Istanbul) is Karadeniz Pide Doner ve Lahmacun in the Besiktas area of Istanbul in a pedestrian walking area: Bakkal Sokak #6.

We booked this hotel at the recommendation of our travel agent. We really loved our stay here. We stayed twice—6 nights at the beginning and 3 more nights at the end of our Turkey trip. The rooms are spacious, elegantly decorated and well equipped. The bathroom is modern, clean with an excellent rain-shower head to refresh you and high quality toiletries. The staff is gracious and extremely helpful- always ready to assist you. Hotel breakfast offers a good selection of Turkish and Western choices. Of equal importance is that the hotel is conveniently situation in a quiet and beautiful neighborhood in Sultanahmet. It is only a 10 minute walk away from the Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia, Topkapi and the tram which takes you to other sights in the city. Across the street is the “Meat House ” restaurant- which serves simple and tasting home-cooking dishes at very reasonable prices. If you are in the mood for a splurge, take a 10 min walk to have a delicious meal at the Balikci Sabahattin - an excellent fish/seafood restaurant (reservation advised).
We enthusiastically recommend the Biz Cevahir hotel as an excellent base for any traveler to explore the wonderful city of Istanbul.
