Very nice museum. Definitely worthwhile to see! Understandably nationalist perspective exists. Will take your 1-2 hours. Easy to go with tram (Topkapi station). I'd say go to Chora Museum and Mihrimah Sultan Mosque in the very same day, as it s close to this place.

A spectacular museum for exploring the conquest of Constantinople by the Ottomans. Off the beaten "westerner" tourist track, but highly attended by Turks. Near the old wall, it showed why it was breached. The panorama of the conquest was over the top! A Janissary marching band, cannon blasts--even though there was no movement you felt like you were there. Suddenly we Canadians realized we were experiencing someone else's meaningful history on their terms--like going to Philadelphia and understanding 1776.

As if the history of Istanbul had started with the conquest by the Ottoman. it is a very limited and narrow minded way to promote a certain kind of "neo ottoman" glorification. The animation is rather poor and even certain equipments that have for sure costed a fortune are absolutly tasteless. No sign of magnificence for this kitchy place.
it will probably stay a sign of the AKP period at power unless some more inspired people transformed it to the magnificence of the city during all ages and make it a real museum for education. absolutly to be set aside unless real transformation is done.

We had never heard of Panorama 1453 before stumbling across it the day we left Istanbul. It has the single best historic painting I have seen. Not only that, but parts of the painting are in 3D and their are replica weapons between the painting and where you stand. Audio in English explains the painting if that is required. Totally blown away. A must see and we will return to see this again.
