“A Gem of a hotel!”
Reviewed October 30, 2012

This Hotel is certainly a Gem as has been depicted in the reviews. We have travelled the world quite extensively an stayed in many standards of hotels but we believe the BASILEUS surpassed them all. The hotel is more than comfortable and ideally situated but it is the staff who make this hotel. They could not do enough to make our stay in Istanbul memorable. Where else in the world would the concierge (Yusof) loan you 200 Turkish Lire until we could exchange money the next day. He also was very knowledgeable about his city and able to reccomend the important sites to see and good resonabley priced restaurants. When our pre arranged transport to the airport let us down, the boys were only too willing to transfer us in their own car and at no cost to ensure that we were able to meet our flight home. When we returned home, we received a wonderful email to thank us for staying with them - a nice thought to top off our holiday.

This hotel is very well located and is an inexpensive place to stay in the Sultanhamet District. It puts you in walking distance of all of the major sites although you do have to go uphill to get there, just take your time. This hotel had one of the better breakfast selections. The rooms are basic and not 5 star rooms but are clean and meet the requirements for a place to sleep after a long day of touring. We were on the ground floor and the rooms were quiet enough that outside noise did not prevent a good nights sleep and the beds are comfortable. Their recommendations on things to visit were very useful. I have to say that I did end up missing my flight out of Istanbul because of them and am still upset about this. They booked a private shuttle to the sabiha gokcen airport for the 4 of us and only allowed 2 and 1/2 hours before our flight departed. It took almost 3 and 1/2 hours to get to the airport. If you are leaving from this airport, you need to allow at least 4 hours in case you run into traffic. This is something I would have expected the hotel to know about. My rating is for the hotel itself and the missed connection did not come into play with the rating.

Yusuf and Ekrem, from Basileus Hotel, went out of their way to make our stay in Istanbul as smooth as possible. Our 12 High School students had a fabulous time in the city and the hotel is ideally situated and the staff very friendly and helpful.

Located just south, down the hill from the Blue Mosque a 5 minute walk from the Hippodrome (uphill it might take a minute longer :-). The hotel is in an appartmnet building of the same age as the surrounding houses. restaurants cafe's are nearby, a little shop (for water coke or beer) is across the street. The location can't be faulted. The staff is very helpfull, they know the neighborhood and all the nice plaes in Istanbul a tourist should go to. They speak ok english so communication was no problem. We had room 112 on the ground floor which was spacious with a double and a single bed and plenty of room to stow your suitcases.
Since the hotel is in an older building, the soundproofing is not as in new buildings so you can hear the next room or the one above. It didn't bother us since it was not very loud and of course expected. Bathroom was OK , the shower seeming to be somewhat newer. In our room the toiletbowl was loose and the ventilator made some noise.
The beds were a bit hard for my taste.
the room had airconditioning.
the price we paid was 270 euro for 3 nights.

We stayed at this lovely boutique hotel in September 2012 and found it to be the most wonderful introduction to Istanbul. It is less than 5 minutes walk to the Blue Mosque and the Hippodrome, close to great restaurants and bars, and we just walked everywhere. Yusef, the manager was beyond helpful - he knows everything about Istanbul and helped us make the most of our time. He was determined that we should see the best of Istanbul. All of his advice was excellent, as was his English. The other staff were also wonderful, and the delicious omelettes ad buffet at breakfast were a great way to start the day. The rooms were large, comfortable and spotless. We will go back when we can, and I have recommended the Basileus to all of our friends. It is the best hotel we have stayed in for many years.

I agree with many of the comments already given. This is a very well located hotel with friendly and helpful staff and we were able to rely on their recommendations for local restaurants and sight seeing. The area can be quite noisy but the windows are efficient at blocking this out. There is a soft drink minibar, tea and coffee facilities and a safe in the rooms. I would recommend bringing your own hairdryer - the one supplied is one of those attached to the bathroom wall which is not easy to use if you wish to blowdry your hair.

Room Tip: The superior rooms are larger and have a seating area by the window.
