“Excellent quality fashionable taverna in Karakoy”
Reviewed January 10, 2014

We found a good mix of customers in this darkish, candle-lit restaurant, both locals and well-off tourists. The menu is short, but very varied and the food is excellent: at the end we settled for mezes and no main course, with a great chocolate dessert.

We particularly liked the good-English speaking waiters and the great music played.

“Aegean "Moro"”
Reviewed December 18, 2013 via mobile

Londoners cherish Moro for its clever and creative reinterpretation of Moresque cuisine, based of first quality fresh ingredients. Maya seems to have applied the same philosophy to the Aegean cuisine with great success. After a week sampling a large share of the best restaurants in town, Maya delivered our best meal. Service was very nice and helpful in suggesting us how to mix several mezes, a main that we shared for 2, and a nicely paired wine. We liked every single dish, including the dessert offered at the end by the house. We liked it so much that we ended up buying the chef's cookbook - and she autographed it for us. Highly recommended.

“Superb food, but food bill totaled price of inexpensive wine”
Reviewed November 24, 2013

The food is superb, even inspired - the best we had in Istanbul. But the price of a bottle of wine is out of proportion with the price of food. Our bill for two appetizers and two main dishes was half the price of our $100 USD (200 Turkish Lira). In other words, the next to least expensive of Turkish white wine was 98 Turkish Lira. That doesn’t make sense.

The service was mediocre. It didn’t match the reputation of the restaurant, the food, or the décor. Our waiter asked if we were ready to order 5 minutes after we were given menus and we had to ask to have our wine glasses refilled. (It was a Monday evening and the restaurant was half filled at best.)

“Great food, mediocre service”
Reviewed November 17, 2013

We enjoyed the wonderfully crafted and delicious mezes they offered, in addition to some excellent wine. Unfortunately, they seemed inconvenienced by us. Understandably, there are often two dinners in Istanbul - an earlier crowd who is mostly tourist and a later crowd that is mostly local. If your meal splits the two time periods, you see an unfortunately stark difference in service. Highly recommend this place for a delicious meal, just don't expect to be welcomed.

“Disappointing, bordering a two-star rating”
Reviewed November 11, 2013

After having read the many glowing reviews including a recent article in the Wall Street Journal, we were so looking forward to trying a new "take" on Turkish cuisine at Lokanta Maya ... only to be so disappointed. Our food ranged from being bland and greasy (the oiliness of the basmati rice with caramelized onion and shrimp dish precluded my ability to taste of anything else), to unpleasantly flavored (the rice and anchovy dish was overly fishy). The chef's signature dish, zucchini/courgette fritters, was also greasy, with no hint of cardamom in the accompanying yogurt. Their so-called "borek" was nothing more than a floppy eggroll.

The setting is nice and contemporary, for which we fell when looking at their website.

The service, as other prior guests have commented, was cold and unfriendly.

We hope for their sake that our experience at Lokanta Maya was an aberration, otherwise it must be hype over substance! In contrast, our group had a wonderful evening at Yeni with wonderful food, lovely service, and a very warm setting.
