A friend and I did this morning walking tour on our first morning in Istanbul. Semih (Sammy) is a really great guide and is so knowledgable as well as friendly. As there was only the two of us it was really personal and we could ask anything we liked. Sammie gave us some great tips regarding shopping, and lots of information regarding culture and day to day life in turkey! A visit to buy the best doner kebab in turkey completed a great morning!!!

Our guide Semih (sammy) took us on a wonderful trip thru the back streets of Taksim. He explained history and architecture in depth and was very knowledgeable. He took us for Turkish coffee and we had our grounds read by a psychic, which was very fun!

This was a great way for me to get started, and familiar with Istanbul, in particular the Beyoglu area. The walking tour began at the Hippodrome and Semih, the guide is knowledgeable and obviously enjoys sharing the history of this area. We then proceeded on the tram to Beyoglu with introduction to Taksim Square and a great walk down Istiklal Cadessi, where many locals hang out. Semih has a lot of information on this area and it was great to walk around and about thru the small side streets that branch off of Istiklal Cadessi. This was particularly helpful to me as I returned several times to walk around and enjoyed lunch at a restaurant (not listed, not even a sign outside, and an elevator ride up to the top floor of this building on a small side street - nice to do something that is a little hidden and unknown) recommended by Semih. Oh, and there was a fun Tarot Card/coffee ground reading, off on a side street - a good respite from the walking. Semih is personable and patient, knowledgeable and is an example of 'new Istanbul'. When I return I will definitely take another Istanbul Urban Adventure tour!

Our trip to Istanbul in September was FANTASTIC. One of the most memorable moments of this week-long trip was the night of September 6th when we visited a Turkish family and had a GREAT meal with them. The food was simply delicious!!! There was enough food for you to have a second serving. I sure took advantage of that opportunity.
The family was lovely. We were allowed to asked questions and they were answered honestly. The children were a pure delight.
Semih and his partner were wonderful tour guides. They helped to translate, but one of the little girls was able to practice her English on us. She was pretty good considering she is just learning how to speak it.
After dinner, Semih took us to a local cafe where we drank tea, used a shisha pipe and played backgammon. There is no need to worry if you don't know how to play backgammon, Semih is a wonderful teacher.
We are in our fifties and the other couple was much younger than us, probably in their late twenties. They too had a great time.
If you visit Instanbul, this is a MUST tour to take. It's inexpensive and trust me when I say that you will love every minute of it!!!
BRAVO to whomever came up with the idea to create such a tour!!!

Very enjoyable. Semih, our guide, took us to a local family, who cooked dinner for everyone to share family style. Semih acted as our translator, he also answered all our questions about everything (culture, family life, transportation, politics, you name it), and he encouraged us to ask the children questions in English so they can practice. The wives were very hospitable, the children were playing. Afterwards we went to a cafe for hookah, and he taught us how to play backgammon. Overall, it was a very laid back, enjoyable evening tour, around 4-5 hours. I highly recommend it. Note that there is no sightseeing, this tour gives you glimpse and taste of local life.
