I stumbled upon Sokullu Restaurant, near Sultanhamet Square during a week in Istanbul in September, 2012. It's a lovely little find and I went there four times. Wasn't disappointed once. Friendly service, excellent food; an oasis on a little side street. My favourite dishes included a casserole of lamb, mushrooms, eggplant and peppers still bubbling in its own little earthenware pot and anything with eggplant. The restaurant also accepts credit cards. If I ever went back to Istanbul that's where I'd go first. Wouldn't even stop to unpack.
