4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 6, 2013

We had booked this place seven months ago. Chosen a low floor room because of my mobility. Very disappointed to find they had put us in the attic. No amount of arguing would change it as hotel full. We were originally there for two days but dropped to one as we were arriving so late in theorning. Seems that's were we lost our preferred room. I left my washbag in downstairs washroom. Day shift not bothered about it at all. Night shift came back on and rang his manager to ask where it had been put. Was so pleased as it had my pain meds in it. What a difference in staff. Apart from the spiral staircase which we only had to go up twice and the lights kept going out, everything else was fine. Yes the view out the room window was the roof tops etc but from the terrace you could see the sea. Breakfast was good. Tea, coffee hairdryer, liquid soap and WiFi all included. Came back to the hotel to be collected to ho to the airport so use of downstairs bathroom for a freshen up. VERY close to all places to visit. So all in all a good stay. BUT if you have mobility problem go for somewhere with a lift.

I stayed here in March 2013 for one night. It was pretty low-grade and after having stayed in many other hotels in the area over the years, by far the worst. In addition to the seedy location and burdensome stairwell, they had real trouble during check-in and check-out - shouldn't be as long and difficult as it was. This is definitely not a professional operation and most of the staff seemed clueless how to handle customers.

The main issue, though, and the reason I am writing this review, was that I had another reservation booked at Magnificent for my return trip to Istanbul after traveling outside the city for a bit. This was through Hotels.com and I called them five days and twenty three hours before my reservation in order to cancel to reservation (since there are much better hotels in the area, even at the low price). Hotels.com was kind enough to call Magnificent to ask if they would waive the penalty (they had a six day prior to the date cancellation policy, which I missed literally by forty minutes). They initially agreed to waive the cancellation fee, but then later charged my credit card as a no-show and then told Hotels.com they never agreed to cancel the fee. This led a lot of back-and-forth between me, Hotels.com, and the management at Magnificent - who flat refused to reverse the charge.

I would really caution people to reconsider any plans they have at this hotel given this experience. Their actions seemed very deceptive and down-right dishonest, all because they did not want to give up 54 euro. Is it really worth it to be that dishonest? Probably given that they didn't have many other people staying there. It's really a shame because the people who work at the hotel are actually really nice, including the manager/owner. They just don't seem to know how to run a business.

Do yourself a favor and book somewhere else.

Room Tip: Choose a room at a different hotel.

Very nice newly renovated building in Sultanahmet, Istanbul.
Helpful friendly staff, good breakfast on the roof terrace with a lovely view of the old part of town.
No lift in the hotel, and narrow spiral staircase to the top floor, so getting suitcases up and down is tricky. Turkey, specifically are very eco-concious and have sensors on all the lights with a timer limiting the duration that the lights remain on. This hotel had themm set to the shortest possible setting, and the lights only remained on for a few seconds in the stairway, so you have to dance around to be able to see where you are gong. Rooms small but comfortable and clean. Windows double glazed insulate from heat or cold and noise from the narrow street below.

Room Tip: The top floor rooms (402) are directly under where breakfast is prepared and served. If they drop a...

We were not expecting too much from this hotel. For 54€ a night (cheap) only three minutes walk from the Hippodrome (Blue Mosque etc) and all the sights you don't. When we arrived we were told that they had to change our room, and that we would now be given the terrace room Ok we thought, turned out to be up at least three flights, on a spiral staircase where the lights flashed on and off sporadically. However the helpful staff did carry our bags up for us. To say the room was small would be an understatement, but it was clean and the shower room was well appointed. The balcony was a fire escape with the worst view ever. There was a TV, free air conditionng, Tea and coffee making facilities, and a free safe in the room so that was a bonus. The room was also cleaned every day to an acceptable standard. The breakfast was the same every day, but there was more than enough cheese, meat, bread, cereal etc available. If you are looking for somewhere cheap and cheerful near to the main attraction this place might suit, but like us do not expect too much. p.s the staff also carried our bags back down the stairs at the end of our stay.

Room Tip: Would probably avoid terrace room (513) unless you have a spirit of adventure.

Recently, our stay in Istanbul involved having a good location in old town so we could visit the sites and also get around Turkey. The manager Yaseen was so accommodating and helpful to enable us to have a great vacation and see the wonders that Turkey has to offer. Our room was excellent while the breakfast every morning was delicious also. I highly recommend staying here for the price and the quality of attention and service that the Magnificent Hotel staff have to offer.
