I stayed at the Istanbul Golden City for a week in June of 2014, and had a perfectly enjoyable experience. The staff is friendly and extremely helpful, even under unusual circumstances (my flight was horribly delayed and I arrived at 4 AM, only to be met by a very kind manager, despite the hour!). The rooms are comfortable and the hotel is located quite close to public transit. I wound up walking to the Old City daily for the experience, and it's only 20 minutes by foot to Hagia Sophia/Blue Mosque.
The only negatives are largely beyond the hotel's control. The neighborhood is mostly residential and working class, so it may not seem photogenic, although I never felt unsafe or even uneasy. Street noise on the lower floors is noticeable, but nothing that prevented me from having a good night's sleep, so I found it a minor issue. The lifts, however, are VERY small, so large families may have to make multiple trips to higher floors.
Even so, the hotel offered spectacular views from the rooftop restaurant (the food is fine, but nothing truly exceptional) and more importantly, offered good comfort and wonderful staff that were eager to help. The price, also, was very reasonable. I would recommend this hotel to anyone staying in Istanbul.
