On our first afternoon in Istanbul, we walked down to the harbor to find a boat tour of the harbor. We took a smaller tour boat that cost 10 lire. The ride was 2 hours long and went to the second bridge across the Strait. The scenery was amazing and included palaces, mosques and castles. However, there was no narrative from the boat crew to tell about what we were seeing. Do the ride but try to find a tour boat the includes a narration about the sites.

Breathtaking view from the Hilton Conrad! This made our stay more inviting and relaxing having this view out of our window from our room. interesting that many ships and boats use this waterway and that Istanbul can take pride that this makes the visit more pleasant. The weather was perfect and there was always a nice breeze.

A lot of the traditional commercials at the hotels and airport viewed boat tours costing from 50-70 euro. Don´t bother with those I would say. Over priced and if you don´t like the entertainment you are stuck there for a few hours.
We talked with some other tourists about them and they had nothing good to say about it.
Instead we went down to the harbour and took a really cheap tour instead, 10try/person. It was a quick tour up and down the river that took about 1½ hour that gave you a good chance to see some of the important buildings along the river.

We took the ferry from Eminonu to Anadolu Kavagi, then climbed to the top of the hill above the town to Yoros Castle, in order to view the Black Sea. The ferry takes about 1.5 hours from Istanbul and costs 15 TL, a great value. It makes a few stops (you can't get off if your destination is the final stop) and gives great views of the yalis along the way. Vendors sell very inexpensive tea and cups of the famous yogurt from Kanlica, which is also one of the ferry stops. The climb to Yoros Castle takes about 15 minutes, but the views are spectacular from the top and there are some cafes along the way. After visiting the castle you can either take the ferry back (same price, or you can buy a return for 25 TL) or you can take the 15A bus to Kanlica, then transfer to another bus which will take you to Uskudar, on the Asian side of Istanbul, where you can take one of the many ferries back to the European side. We chose to take the bus, as it allowed us to see a bit more of Istanbul. If you purchase an Istanbulkart, you can use it for the buses on the Asian side and the city ferries to return to the European side. It can also be used for the city buses, trams, metro, and the Golden Horn ferries.

I wish I could remember the name of the specific boat tour that we did, but it was $5 USD per person and was 1.5 hours long. It was a perfect July afternoon to take this tour in. The water was beautifully colored and the tour went all the way up the Bosphorus past both bridges. It was such a relaxing way to take in the history of Istanbul along the water!
