We were disappointed in the historic sites in Istanbul. Perhaps we've traveled too many places and are spoiled from Rome, Paris, Moscow, etc. We found the sites unorganized, too populated, pricey and not as incredible as we expected.

An amazing walk through the ages within a short distance. Topkapi Palace, Blue Mosque, Basilica Cistern, Hagia Sophia, The Palace Mosaics Museum, Hagia Irene, the Museum of Turkish & Islamic Art, the Archaeology Museum, the Hippodrome...Sultanahmet Park...all nearly at your fingertips...one from the other. Okay, it might take 10 minutes to get from one to the other, but no more unless you are a snail. In between: vendors selling roasted chestnuts and charcoal grilled corn on the cob...freshly cut watermelon to slake your thirst...and lots of Turkish treats.

Alleys in alleys, in side streets off back streets off side roads - what a great place to explore. Plenty to do for a weekend break, but three to four days is more than enough

You need several days in Istanbul to see even the major historical and cultural sights. Don't shortchange yourself. Do it all and see it all. If you go in high season be prepared for hoards of tourists. Everywhere is extremely crowded but don't let that put you off. The mosques, the bazaars, the palaces, the museums, the old back streets of Sultanahmet are all must do's. Istanbul is modern yet ancient and has so much for everyone. It is so easy to get around on public transport using an Istanbul card but be prepared for hills. They are everywhere. If you love old towns, ancient cultures, ancient ruins, amazing architecture include Istanbul in your travel plans
