Just like when you travel in Turkey, Istanbul is a must see point. When you travel in Istanbul, this area is a MUST see point as well. It's not a long way to walk, so it's very easy just walk there to visit Museums, Churches, Mosques, shopping mall, etc. etc. A through ticket is highly recommanded. Also you can try the BIG BUS for easy to visit different hot points in Istanbul.

Easy to walk to all the historical sites in Sultanahmet, lots to see, eat, snack on. It was crowded on the weekend with lines at most attractions. It is all worth seeing, and the cost isn't too high. I enjoyed the Basilica Cistern and the Archeology museum with the Alexander sarcophagi. The museum is under renovation but still is a beautiful place to spend an afternoon. Be sure to try the simit, a sesame covered ring baked crisp on the outside and tender on the inside....addicting.

Hagia Sofia, the Blue Mosque and the Topkapi palace are all adjacent - avoid visiting at weekends - mobbed! Mosaic museum really worthwhile and well-presented. Yerebetan cistern well worth a visit. You'll need the best part of a day to get round the Topkapi palace. The displays of flowers everywhere we went were absolutely stunning - spring is definitely the best time to go.

Worthwhile considering a museum pass (NB not valid for all museums - check the list.

Walking from the Galata Bridge to the Galata Tower is quite a climb - you'll need a beer at the end!

Tour of the Bosphorous/Golden Horn was a bit disappointing - very little historic detail from the guide so take a book with you. Our tour included a cable-car ride up to the Pierre Loti viewpoint, worthwhile, but we could have passed on the extensive lecture on the intricacies of Islamic headstones during the walk down through the cemetery.

It'd be advisable to get to Topkapi palace early in the morning around 9am if you want to fully explore and admire the home of many Sultans and Sultanas. There is so much to see and learn from that you can't simply breeze past the artifacts that tell history of centuries. You have to spend reasonable time to absorb the history with true feelings. The Topkapi simply is a special historical spot that will continue to attract tourists all across the world for centuries to come.

The paintings are amazing considering the period to which they belong to. The place is under restoration and was open only partially, but we still had to pay the full entry ticket price!
